How's this line from the manual
"The transmission is a fill for life unit and no level check is required at service unless a leak is present." Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

Atfter 3 years of not checking the oil level your waranty epires the same time as your transmission. Good plan on Land Rovers part. As soon as something goes wrong with the transmission they will say that the gearbox was leaking and you should have checked the level and topped it up.

I raised this some time ago as a serious issue - some standard components from years past with MASSIVE service lives, that you wouldnt see on a 300tdi.
I know some oils and manufacture processes do increase service life...take the difflock oils double service life at a minimum and i heard of it quadrupling them on gearboxes. But i think its a real issue. I think there is a case, despite warranty length, that if you follow manufactures guides you could claim outside of warranty - ive heard similar cases, but its probably not easy. I will likely replace the oils at yr 3 or 4 service... Mike |

Are you sure? The Service Maintenance Check sheet says renew the Gearbox at 200Kkm and Transfer Case & Front/Rear Axles at 80Kkm. I'm debating whether to renew the gearbox at 100Kkm and Transfer Case + Front/Rear axles at 40Kkm |

Drain and fill up with 2.2 L of 75W-90 GL-4 oil.
I change the diffs and Tbox oils at 20kkm after passing lots of rivers and driving on very dusty conditions. MK NB: GL-5 is not better than GL-4. Even the Tbox accepts GL-4 Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Help!
I'm halfway through an early-life fluid change. Engine was easy, but I don't seem to have anthing to fit the GEARBOX OIL FILLER Fortunately I haven't drained the old out yet (I always test the filler before draining). I thought I had a good selection of tools, incl the TORX (T50 I think?) for R380 gearboxes etc, but nothing seems to fit, and I can't get a good enough look at it to see whether it's hex or Torx. Elsewhere on the forum it says T50, but I thought the R380 was T50, and that's not big enough... If anyone knows, that would be great, otherwise I'll order a set of each covering the sizes I don't already have! Cheers Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

The original question about the Castrol BOT oil is interesting. The Freelander2 uses BOT 118 or something like that in the front diff, but you simply can't get it except from the dealer. Perfect if you are out in the middle of beyond...

I think all these BOT things are kind of factory fill oils. You just need to know the specs in the web and get an equivalent. Puma 110" SW

I'm not so sure although I know what you are saying would be common sense.
I'm talking to Castrol at the moment about supply and mentioned the BOT 118 for the Freelander. They mentioned that someone like Fuchs were making the oil for Castrol (work that out...) and Castrol were supplying Land Rover with the BOT for a fixed period contract. They were the ones who said that the BOT is only avalable through the dealer - even Castrol can't supply me with the BOT direct. This is why you see more and more 'Dealer only' comments next to oil lists, especially on the gearbox/Trans/Final drive side. Even the SAF-XO oil has changed to the Syntrax Longlife recently. Doubt it is just a rebranding. |
