mt82 output shaft advice
hello
wondering if anyone is able to offer me some advice with my output shaft. as my gearbox is off the defender already i thought i better take a look to see what its like as ive heard it can be a common issue with them. the truck has only done around 70k miles. the output shaft had obviously been fitted dry by the factory so there was some very light surface rust (spent 90% of its time in a dry climate).

i was wondering if it is really worth the hassle and cost of replacing it when it looks good to me very minimal wear. i would change the snap ring and use the recommended antisieze. is this a bad idea?

cheers

If after cleaning up it really is a good tight fit with negligible wear, the only reason to replace it would be if you were fitting one of the upgraded solutions. On a vehicle with 70k miles and no wear, if it is in genuinely good condition (and not having seen it I cannot judge) then I would not replace it, but would make sure to lubricate it copiously on assembly.

Personally I would not use the factory-spec anti-seize (which I believe to be a form of Weicon paste) since I don't think anti-seize is appropriate for this "problem" but would instead use a high-quality molybdenum disulphide grease (a good CV-joint grease, for example).

Pictures show the pieces in very good shape. Beside the grease make sure the snap ring fit is in really tight. Puma 110" SW

Having had three output shafts within the first 50k miles, I would normally say replace it while its out. But it does look in good condition, I think i'd worry the replacement might be worse!

Ok thank you very much yes that was one of my concerns and I don’t really want to pay the extra for one of the updated ones that have been made by a couple of companies.

Thank you for putting the photos on there as well

I will replace snap ring and hope for the best then

What you save on not replacing the output shaft, as it looks in very good condition, you could invest in a new tyre 😂 (that’s if it’s one of yours that is?)
