They probably do to an extent - a couple of MPG, perhaps? There are so many other factors though, that it's difficult to get a definitive answer. Darren

Compared to a standard road tyres I believe they make a vast difference to your fuel consumption, similar to variations of inflation pressure. They also make a big difference to road noise, road holding and ride comfort. Ride like you stole it!! If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

It depends (don't you just hate that!).
If you're driving around at 20-40mph, you'll see no difference at all. If you're doing 70mph on the motorway, you'll get slightly worse consumption. I was very disappointed in the tiny difference going to more road-oriented tyres made to consumption, but very pleased with the reduction in road noise at speed. |

Im running 35inch KM3s and a 2 inch lift on a 2.2 110
Normal mpg is now 23-24 where I used to get 26 previously. |

So if measuring against your 23mpg figure, that’s nearly a 13% reduction in fuel efficiency Ride like you stole it!!

It does depend on a lot of variables, but overall, slightly worse.
I changed 235/85 Contis for 255/85 KM3s for August and September, then to 235 hakkapeliittas in October. Aside from one outlier that was weather related, there is not much difference... Click image to enlarge Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭 |

That looks a wonderfully presented bit of data. Apart from the arrows….disappointing DeeEss, disappointing Monsieur Le Grenadier

As mentioned above, there are so many other variables to consider, the first being surely no one who buys/drives a Defender has frugality at the top of their criteria.
Total Weight, usage, road surface, weather conditions, driving style, engine type, mapping, aerodynamics (roof racks and bolt on bits), AND tyres probably have a bigger influence on MPG that just the tyres themselves. At least more than might be lost just in buying a set of MTs over road tyres. I’d think the greater question about to MT or not to MT would be cost, handling, noise, looks, off-road y/n and MPG (not necessarily in that order as it is horses for courses). I still can’t make my mind up between (my current) KO2s and the Cooper STT Pro which I think look fab. Do I mind noise? Not really, I’ve always got music on or window open. Do I mind MPG? No, mainly local driving and all claimed through business. Do i mind purchase cost? Not too much given longevity and being put through the business. Do I mind handling? Yes, given I live up twisty mountain roads and do 95% of my driving on them. And especially in snow. That’s why I’m still leaning towards the KO2s as they handle (generally) better and are snow rated. But do I love the look/stance of the Coopers, damned right, and it’s a constant tousle. So if it’s something you’re think of doing, hence the OP, I’d suggest looking at the bigger picture… Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

A comment along these lines comes up pretty much any time somebody mentions MPG but I think it's a misplaced criticism. Firstly, everything is relative and a, say, 10% difference in MPG and hence fuel costs may be significant to some, even if it's just the principle of not spending more than is necessary. Secondly, monitoring MPG can be good indicator of something not working properly. Whilst a Defender may be a relatively inefficient vehicle, there's no reason why it should be more inefficient than necessary for it's chosen usage. Yep, thats about right. To be fair, I use the 130 as my daily drive now so the 110 doesn't do that many miles so not really a problem. |

I found that I got better consumption with the new BFG ATRs when fitted after my well used and older Wrangler MT tyres of the same size, but put that down to having new tyres and a larger circumference ...
Since I have had the remap I do find a better consumption on my regular monthly return drive from Cornwall to Scotland, sitting at a comfortable 60-65 all the way. I’m not an acceleration fan so never race the engine, but its nice to be able to cruse at a reasonable speed and get a good 400 miles out of a tank.
