The typical reason is a split in the intercooler pipework or sometimes the intercooler itself. Darren

Intercooler has been replaced and all but the hard to reach pipework are silicon replacements. I plan to see what remains of the original rubber pipework and check/replace those too.

Unfortunately, the hard to reach bits are also quite often the culprits. Darren

I agree. I am not sure what rubber pipes are even left. My engine bay is a sea of blue pipework

P0101 covers a variety of MAF-triggered OBD faults, what's the full code? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I dont have any further code details. My OBD reader is fairly basic. It simply reads "P0101 - Powertrain Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range / Performance Problem"
I have a new MAF sensor, Intercooler and most of my hose kit is new silicone. Wiring tested and good. I was hoping someone had an idea based on the specific symptom of being perfect till 60mph (or there abouts). |

Fault p0101 is usually given when there is an aspiration problem and the air requested by the ECU does not coincide with the air sucked in.
Do you have the vehicle remapped? do you wear snorkels? Also check the air filter. |

By any chance does your air filter get wet in rain/very dirty.
I was getting this a lot, took the air intake grate off the drivers side and the plastic was all loose, hooked it all back up touch wood it’s been fine since (MY13 110 Sw) |

Fitted a new connector to the MAF sensor and very carefully soldered all the new wires back into the loom. Test drive for 20 mins or so and at 70mph on dual track pinged the EML fault code P0101. Pulled over with engine running and cleared fault code off. Did same trip and tried to do exactly the same thing to work out at what point the EML lights and it ran like a dream. No faults. WT..hell.
Any ideas? |

Need to get a more specific fault code as otherwise you’re just guessing.
Might be worth a low pressure or smoke test to check you don’t have any tiny boost system leaks. Was a thread on here in past week or so about using a bike pump adapted to turbo compressor outlet hose to pressure test. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

So, last weekend I took the old girl for a test run with a carefully soldered wiring to a new MAF connector (easy and cheap change just in case the connector was dodgy). I drove for 20 mins without EML and then bit the bullet and pushed it on dual carriageway. At 70mph it held for a couple of minutes before the EML and P0101 popped up. We reset and went on same journey without a repeat of the EML or fault.
I have now driven the defender daily and have covered 100 miles since the weekend including a 20 mile motorway stint and several steep up hill full throttle blasts to push for the fault. No fault has occurred since then. This weekend I will be going over the 'air' pipework with a fine tooth comb and am trying to source a smoke test as advised in case of a small split somewhere. BUT, regardless of the fault code, why on earth would it be so inconsistent? I cannot repeat the fault in exactly the same circumstances, which makes me feel like I have one foot on a mine Again, happy to hear any advice. |

EGR issues, can sometimes create phantom MAF DTC’s. There can also be nuisance MAF DTC’s caused by having a RAI or Snorkel.
This isn’t something that I’d had with mine, but I have heard about it before something that some people have had happen and others haven’t. Is the filter in good nick, not an oiled type? It has been known for like d air filters to have oil migrate from the filter and contaminate the MAF and also cause restriction. Personally I don’t think you can beta genuine air filters replaced at servicing. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

HI Steve
Thanks for responding. So, we have a new air filter, new maf sensor and new EGR valve and all genuine replacements. The EGR valve could be sticky but its been working fine for the last 100 miles and in any case it seemed only to occur at over 65 mph in 6th gear rather than associated to boost in lower gears. Is it even possible that the new fittings have needed to 'bed' in with the ECU? Does the ECU need to acclimatise to the new equipment? In any case, no EML for 100 miles and counting but bizarre. Just to fill one gap, I have had a new intercooler (genuine standard) as all this started when I blew the seam on the old one during a long motorway run. |
