Land Rover are relying on you have the first service at two years / 21 thousand miles then replacing the vehicle after three years…….

Factor in long term ownership, additional main dealer servicing and extending the warrantee, against keeping a vehicle from a manufacturer with dubious reliability and poor after sales attitude then you get a feeling that the majority will go for a new vehicle as soon as possible……….

Plus don’t forget much of the service costs pay the wages of the ten people cleaning cars, the welcome staff, the person to take your details and take your keys, the person walking around your car filming it to check the condition of the body work, the two ladies in reception, etc, etc , etc…….

I went to an opening event for a LR maintenance facility roll out. Had a great walkaround. Very nice, very fancy, a little OTT for the staff facilities. Cost was £4m and then the ramps, workshop fitout ,matching tool boxes, work areas, were another £850k.

If you're now doing oil changes, those changes have to become more expensive.

Had that with my XC70. Luckily Volvo Approved but they didn't understand how I determined it wasn't working..... handbrake on , front wheels on snow spining nicely. Such a different drive when it was fixed. (even better)

l assume you can take it to an independent dealer for servicing, our local independent Land Rover Specialist is about half the price of the main dealer.

Also, l may be a bit old school but is it really okay to leave the first oil change for 24,000 miles on a diesel engine?

l would be tempted to perform an interim oil change at 12,000

I would probably do an oil analysis at 11months to see the condition of the oil. Here is a recent one from my VW due to the issue of that engine eating its EGR cooler,. Its also doing short journeys whilst I wait for the Defender to arrive.

Extracted 5 litres and topped it up last weekend (would have been easier to drain!)

New Defender is on 24months or 21,000 miles so don’t wait until you have done 24,000… modern Diesels burn much cleaner but 21,000 is a strategic decision to compete for lower whole life cost against the competition.


New Ford Rangers are on 6,000 intervals while at the other end a new Mercedes Sprinter has 37,000 mile intervals…. But it does hold 11lts of oil in its sump.. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Also check that JLR aren’t doing a special deal on an oil and filter change - I booked my car in at 1 year old and 11000 miles, the receptionist wasn’t happy that I wanted a change at ½ the scheduled interval but I reminded them of the issues of oil dilution with previous Land Rover products and the number of engine failures that led to and anyway I was happy to pay the full cost for my own peace of mind.
When I collected the car I queried the low invoice price that was basically for oil, filter and a washer with NO labour charge………. JLR, unknown to me, had just started a special offer on oil and filter changes. I asked the receptionist if they were sending the oil off for analysis - she called the service manager who could only say that JLR had requested 1 litre of the oil taken from the car and he assumed that it was going to be sent for analysis and that he would be adding the engine number and car VIN to the sample bottle as they requested. I never heard anything back though! When the car goes in June 2022 for what will be it’s first scheduled service it will get its 2nd oil and filter change.
I think several people here also took advantage of the same deal. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I got a P300 nearly a year ago, love it and really enjoy driving it everyday. it’s Looking like I’m going to hit 17000 miles within the first year, so I didn’t want to wait until 21000 for first service so had an oil change done at 8000 miles (I intend to keep it for at least 5/6 years) only cost around £150 for new oil and filter from main dealer, and I swear the mpg improved a bit. If I’m gentle on throttle and stay around 65 mph I can get an average of 26mpg on my motorway commute. Even had it to 30mpg a couple of times. And I carry lots of tools and crap in the back (probably around 100kg most days).
