Another thought - why a switch rather than a simpler hub?

Can you even get a hub now? Switches are so cheap it’s pointless.

Consumer grade switches are much of a muchness but:

1) check if you prefer ports on the front or back of the unit
2) if you need jumbo frames check it is supported ( but most decent brands support it)

I take it you are only looking for gigabit speed -

This has ports on rear, but lights on front so you can see of tx/rx

This has ports on rear

Both have metal case

Thanks for the suggestions, seems like my best starting point will be with one of the lower end unmanaged switches. Not a big outlay, so no problem with an upgrade if needs be.

"Important thing is to do the network ports properly. Don't just have a cable hanging out of a wall."

I have done a little of both. Tidy network socket/ports where they show, cable out of the wall where they don't - behind TV. Question - is there anything lost at cable breaks/joins? Is the cable out of the wall direct into TV (or other device) providing a better feed than a cable from a cable break/join at a wall socket/port? In my years of trying to achieve hi-fi perfection I would always avoid breaks/joins in cable. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this.

All that stuff you worry about with analogue hifi connections and gold cables is out the window, its all digital so there is no degredation of signal/quality etc, and corrupt data will be resent; so long as everything is properly terminated and routed (i.e. not running with power cables, not bent like a pretzel).

The purpose of having a faceplate on the wall is to protect the cable in the wall, and those 'structured' cables should really be solid core rather than stranded which is more flexible and used in patch cables. All that being said the various standards for all this stuff are pretty forgiving especially in a home situation so you can take major liberties before you even see a problem with the device.

Just bullet proof, install and forget gigabit switch.
Under £30

I have been running one of these for years without any problems.

So have I. Its silent, cool, reliable - its only drawback these days is that its 'only' 1GB, I would really like them to bring out a 2.5GB version. 2005 Td5 90 XS
