Hmmm. i sometimes had the same noise. I now use standard BP diesel and 2T 0il. Noise gone. BM52

It is fuel related. My Puma sounded like it had air in the system. Added some good fuel and a bottle of the Wynns Diesel Power 3 and it has sorted itself out nicely.

I manipulate the timing from within my remaps. Nick has explained very well about how little an adjustment is required to cure the issue, but his car was pretty compliant. I have remapped others that have needed more radical adjustments to quieten them down, and that proves that no two engines respond the same.
Fuel quality is important too, so try to use top branded fuels that have had additives blended in, unlike the cheapo supermarket fuels. You should see better mpg from the branded fuel too. |

The standard fuel is fine, but the premium stuff (Optimax, Ultimate, etc) will be even better still. More additives mean a faster, cleaner burn, which means more torque is produced.

Does that include a recommendation of the addition of 2 stroke oil to diesel??

To be honest, I've never added 2 stroke to diesel, although I do have a bottle on standby in the workshop.
I have used a high dose of Millers Eco max on top of BP Ultimate before. Excellent results, but quite expensive!   |

The jury seems to be still out on the 2 stroke debate. Lots swear by it and there are as many who think that there are sufficient additives in the fuel you buy at the pumps.Over here I use Shell and buy it in bulk i.e. about 1000 lires at a time. When getting the tank filled last time I added 5 litres of 2 stroke to the tank-Castrol Actevo. So every fill the Puma gets the diesel and the 2 stroke. Whether it does any good or not is, like I said open to question. The Puma is exceptionally quiet and pulls like a train. Whether this is down to the 2 stroke or not I cannot say. At the last MOT for the 200tdi I had been using the same diesel/2 stroke mixture in it and I got the lowest emissions figures it ever achieved. Whether this was the 2 stroke/diesel mixture I cannot say for certain.
Bought a second Puma recently and it has been run on the 2 stroke/diesel mixture from new. It is exceptionally quiet without the "rough snarl" I used to get on the first Puma on accelerating when it was new. The new Puma has about 1000 miles on it now. Adding 2 stroke does jack up the cost of every fill and I am just about to get a 6000 mile oil/filter change done on the 2008 Puma. People here have said the using 2 stroke necessitates an early oil/filter change.Adding 2 stroke does make motoring more expensive so if you are going to pay for a premium road diesel which should have everything necessary in it,adding 2 stroke will make it even more expensive. All I can say that it "SEEMS" to give quieter running and "appears" to have helped get lower emissions on the tdi (1992 vintage) but as far as I can judge it has not given an increase in mpg. The most I have ever achieved in the Puma 110 is just over 29 mpg. I.E 29.??. I could round it up to 30 mpg but I have never actually cracked 30mpg in the Puma 110. So it appears to give me some benefits but at a cost. Is it worth it? It is hard to judge. Will I continue the experiment at the next tankfull? I don't know yet. When I first got my Puma it was very noisy - almost like diesel knock. In fact it was mentioned by a couple of people. I put some Wynns diesel additive in the tank and it went quiet(er) after about a mile.
I think it just needs the additive put in every 6 months or so and use reasonable fuel - not supermarket, and I'm a little concerned by this Shell saver fuel. It's cheaper for a reason.  |

Wasn't aware that supermarket fuel was any different from fuel sourced at other filling stations - do refineries have a special "low cost supermarket" output section? |

I used to use Asda fuel and would consistently get 360 miles from full until the light came on. I switched 18 months ago to using either ESSO or Shell fuel (standard not premium though) and now consistently get 400 miles, ie about 11% further. The vehicle also is smoother and seems more powerful.
The improvement in mpg means that the better fuel is marginally cheaper overall. I didn't believe it at first. |

My local Supermarket (Tesco) is 1.40.9 @ moment, the Esso 3 miles away is 1.36.9

I'd never heard of putting a shot of two stroke in with diesel, is this for all diesels?
Also I've read the defender is designed to run on all grades of diesel from around the world, so you would have thought it'd cope with the uks slightly varying qualities its only a car! |
