Cambelt Pulley System issues??
Hi folk ... Still working on and learning about my newly acquired 1994 Defender 90 TDi300.

Today I was flicking through a book called "You & your Land Rover Ninety, One Ten and Defender" by Martin Hodder and I came across this comment on page 115 (See top right of picture):

So what's is the modification? ... and how do I know if I'm pre mod of post mod please??

Cambelt last changed in 2011 at 126,000 miles ... now 156K

Thanks all

IIRC the bottom pulley used to fail / fall apart with belt shredding results - again from memory there was a bottom pulley supplied with the better cam belt kits.

If you do an Internet search you should find good information.

I think basically one of the pulleys has shoulders on. They changed which pulley as the earlier setup caused wear on the belt and thus premature failure.

Also worth noting is the later pulley has two types. One version has presses steel shoulders spotwelded to it which I believe can fail. The later type has machined shoulders, so don't fail.

My computer is currently not working so I don't have the part numbers. But I am sure you will be able to find them easy enough. If you do a search on here I would think you will find a thread about it.

Basically, as soon as you do a cam belt change, make sure you put the later gear on.

Also be aware that if you do get a cambelt kit it won't have everything you will need for doing the job!

Ickle, Mossberg and Dinnu - Thank you so VERY MUCH for the prompt and excellent answers! ... REALLY appreciated.

All I've got to do is find out what pulley is fitted!

Although the last cambelt was changed ten years ago the Defender has only done 30K, what's your thoughts / advice?

Gut feeling are that because its been 10 years, change it (and get the pulley checked) but of course its £££ and I've got the beast booked in for new sills to be fitted next month £££

As always your advise/comments are greatly welcomed.

Thank you and have a good weekend!

Get the cambelt done - definitely. I think the maximum time between changes is 7 years.

If not already fitted you also need to change the injector pump bracket for the revised one that prevents the timing cover moving out of position. Probably only a quarter of the 20+ 300tdi’s that I have owned over the years have had the revised bracket fitted.

You may find that once the revised bracket is fitted, you might have to renew the injector pump head O ring as the reposition of the fuel pump in the correct place by the bracket can cause it to leak if the timing cover has previously been sat out of position slightly.

There was supposed to be a yellow square painted on timing cover if all modifications were done but again in over 20 300tdi’s I have never seen a yellow square!

Whoever fits the kit also needs a MHH Torqueleader to do it properly. Many so called specialists
don’t have one.

An alternative POV to the modification bracket saga is that if your vehicle has got to this point without shedding a belt and the belts are coming off in reasonable condition at replacement time then your engine probably doesn't require the mod.

The other view is a broken Cambelt will always happen at the most inconvenient time and then the cost will be eye watering.......

Well, after this discussion I've just got my Defender back after having the Cam belt changed and three pulleys.

The workshop looked at getting a genuine fuel pump bracket (over £100) too, but after some thought got an "After market" bracket at half the cost. Sadly upon arrival one of the holes was over 5mm out and was not worth fitting. Given the condition of the original cam belt (10 years old) the decision was to use / keep the original one.

Now much happier and job done knowing I've got the correct pulleys and a new belt Very Happy

Another fault fixed Thumbs Up

Bit of a topic resurrection, however currently in the process of getting my 300tdi back on the road after a messy breakup. Cambelt snapped while trying to get it away from the ex so she couldn’t set it on fire Laughing

I’ve got the improved kit and ordered a bracket, what else is required? I did the belt about 6k ago but it snapped very prematurely, so my guess is I missed something last time.
