Defender 90 TD5 Safari snorkle - underbonnet hose routing
A few months ago the RH wing was removed to help with a new ABS modulator install. Since then the snorkle pipework has been rubbing on the steering column shaft. They had one attempt to fix this and its a bit of a bodge and I would prefer to fix it properly?

Would anyone have some pics of their under bonnet hose routing so I can check where someone has prob fubar'd? Failing this I will run a single hose from the wing pass thro and onto the air filter.

I think I can see where the problem is now.

    1. Mild steel coupling tube runs from item 7 into the Safari snorkle flexible duct. This is corroded beyond repair. Some 304 63mm tube has been ordered to replace that.
    2. Item 7 has a hole worn thro due to the steering column linkage rubbing. Replace with a 30 deg. kink silicone tube.
    3. Item 9 no longer has a bracket. Been snapped off at some point so that is free floating.

I will do a quick search and see whether anyone can supply a complete silicone kit to replace all the intake hoses from the wing to the airbox. There must be? 2006 TD5 90 County

If you still use item 1 on the diagram then you could swap to the sealed Nugget Stuff air intake system which is a better design standard. Although i think some Safari snorks don’t use the standard item 1.

Unfortunately this Safari snorkel has an alternative 'item 1'. I will do a search for 'Sealed Nugget'. TY for that. 2006 TD5 90 County

Hopefully most of the ordered parts will arrive here tomorrow but in the meantime I have been looking at the air filter box. I want to remove and clean thoroughly (full of rusty lumps from that corroded intake pipe).

Airbox now out and after removing the inlet pipe to the cyclone....3x bluetits ! Well if the cyclone restricts the flow then these surely add to it?

Rodding through the RAI now to check for nests....or remains of Wink

So cyclone removal - yay or nej ? 2006 TD5 90 County

WOW. Looks like that cyclone saved you this time. I assume your thinking they went in via the rated tube, not in via the snork air intake.

I am guess they went in thro the RAI at some point in the past to make a nest. Checked the snorkel and nothing else found. Could have been in there for years as I have never taken it apart before (we have had the 90 for 10 years).

Hiclone/Cyclone now removed anyway so a clear 2.5" path right it to the filter Wink 2006 TD5 90 County

You could still remove the cyclone as the feathers won’t pass through the air filter.

If anything it would cause less of a restriction than blocking a small area.

Thumbs Up

Looking at the desiccated baby bluetit bodies lying on the gravel this morning it wasn't 3...it was 5. Party in the airbox?

Cyclone now removed o/

Hopefully the parts I have ordered to replace the original ductwork up to the airbox will arrive tomorrow. 2006 TD5 90 County

Looking at the routing again now the parts have arrived this still does not look straightforward.

The outlet rubber hose from the Safari RAI assy points directly at the steering column linkage. To force that in a line below the linkage will take some effort (steel tube and bracketry mounted to the original water dump valve position?). Not keen on that amount of force being applied so I am looking at alternatives.

I do not really need the RAI. We do not wade and no longer life in a dusty environment in the summer months. An air supply from the top of the wing would be more than enough. Removal if the Safari RAI would need to be a later project as that looks like a PITA to get off the wing due to nut access on the inside. 2006 TD5 90 County

Have you got some photos of the parts you have got? The steel tube doesnt seem to be part of the original setup.

From what I recall the original Safari snorkel for TD5s (which I have fitted) which was also for 300tdi had a rubber hose which fitted directly onto a pipe stub which is part of the snorkel.
The later version for TD5s with ABS and TDCi uses the original land rover intake moulding on the inside of the wing.

Sounds like you have the earlier one which will probably be tight with the ABS block. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread
