TD5 turns over but won;t fire

Hi guys...problem with my 99 TD5 Defender this morning.......went to start it as usual.....turns over healthily , goes to fire, engine management light comes back on and it just continues to turn over with no chance of it firing.....it's like it's not getting fuel......hasn't happened before. Any ideas?

2004 Defender 90 Td5 X-Tech LE Zambezi Silver

I had a similar problem with mine a while ago, it would usually start eventually though.

In my case it was caused by a faulty starter motor, (not sure if it was worn motor brushes of shorted turns in the armature,) anyway whatever it was, it was causing loads of electrical interference right next to the crank sensor and swamping the signal to the ECU, shows up on a code reader as "noisy crank signal". A new starter motor cured it immediately.

An easy way to check is by bump-starting it, that way it never failed and always started immediately.
