Defender 2.4 TDCI downpipe exhaust
Hi guys,

I just noticed that the metal “accordion” elbow on my exhaust downpipe has split. The one that’s connected on the turbo.

Although it didn’t seem to have triggered an MOT failure, I was wondering whether it would impact the power of the engine?

I am now trying to find a L4L stock replacement online, but cannot seem to find anything stock. All down pipes seem to been decat ones.

The only one I seem to be able to find is on is on JGS4x4 but it doesn’t have the elbow that mine has… nor does the shape look like what I have currently fitted on mine.

The first link in the OP is for a pipe to delete the front silencer and is not the right part.

The reason you're finding it hard to locate the pipe you need is because it includes the cat and is massively expensive as a genuine part. You're probably better off trying to find a decent take-off part as in the second post. I don't recall seeing an aftermarket option for this pipe complete with cat but I imagine someone must make one.

Remember that deleting the cat is now illegal and an MoT failure if spotted, it could cause a problem if you get pulled for a VOSA check.

Merry Christmas, what you have broken is the shock absorber for vibration adsorption and I don't think you will have much problem to find, then you take it somewhere to repair it, in the 2.4 engine it does NOT give a fault in the ECU but it is highly recommended that you solve it since the exhaust gases come out at a very high temperature and can cause a fire in the vehicle

I seem to recall that some 2.4 TDCI didn’t have that car converter and therefore that MOT centres still accept defenders pre 2011 w/o car converters. Or did I make that up?

Will a cat delete pipe throw a ECU code errors?

Absolutely right. That accordion is indeed the shock absorber - as circled in the picture taken from that eBay Alink above.

My Indy had a look at it and told me I should change it as he didn’t think it could be repaired (there’s only a 1” think split on the edge of a middle spiral)… I was a bit put off by his attitude tbh.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? As I wouldn’t want the car to catch on fire Smile I also feel the cabine smells quite a bit when the engine is cold - probably exhaust gas coming off.

Not would I want to spend £350 for a new part if mine can be repaired.

Find a garage that have some welding skills, a flexible exhaust joint, and it can be done.

Although not on a Defender, I replaced the one on my Golf... since I have the welding equipment it only cost me €10 for the flexible joint and about 1hr work (need to get the front part of the exhaust out to weld around).

You do not need a flexible joint of the exact same length... just cut the exhaust pipe accordingly. But diameter wise should be exact. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

All UK and EU spec 2.4 TDCi Defenders have this cat, some ROW spec may not, and all *should* fail the MOT if any of the factory-fitted emission control equipment (cat, egr, etc) have been removed, disabled, or tampered with. There are currently no tests available to the MoT tester which will detect egr or cat deletion if it is not visible, but a VOSA roadside check can go further. If the cat heat shield is refitted to a non-cat pipe it is almost impossible to spot the absence of the cat, and I have also known testers to mistake the front silencer for the cat.

Cat deletion will not throw up error codes and is not detectable by the ECM.

The engine runs much better without the cat (especially if you replace the factory Induction system with a decent one) but please don't ask how I know!

So in the hypothetical case one would want to delete the cat converter and just put a de-cat pipe, would that specific model fit the 2.4 TDCI straight from the turbo?

That's a pipe to delete the front silencer not the cat.

Alive (and probably others) used to make decat pipes, the Alive one used to allow the refitting of the heat shield, but most seem to have stopped now it's illegal to fit them. You could give Alive a call, they might be able to advise.

Quite surprised by how much of their stock had mods such as wheels/tyres, snorkels or winches. Is this indicative of modified vehicles being more likely to end up in write-off collisions?
