Dpf regen in the back end of nowhere….
As per title, travelling through Guinea yesterday & noticed a strong smell ( toxic) & loads of smoke behind us.
Pulled over straight away as it looked terminal but upon checking underneath / oil level & it starting with no I’ll effects I’m thinking it was a dpf regen.
The fuel here & through Mauritania has been very poor & I’m putting the strange regen down to that?
Any thoughts Gents? Guinea isn’t a place you’d want to break down & the roads are poor & parts would be difficult to source.

Might be worth checking the engine oil hasn’t diluted.
Otherwise keep on trucking.
Not a good idea to stop the engine mid regen.

Thanks for the reply, yes the oil has diluted to a degree but it’s only just been changed & I’m not in a position to change it yet & won’t the service light come up when too much dilution is detected?
Why does it dilute on a regen?

It tends to dilute on a regen because extra fuel is injected into the cylinder during the exhaust stroke intentionally so it won't ignite and is ejected with the exhaust gasses into the dpf. Once the dpf has received sufficient fuel, the fuel in the dpf is ignited with a separate igniter to burn out the crud.

Inevitably some of the unburned extra fuel migrates down the cylinder walls past the rings into the sump.

A more durable approach uses a separate injector in the dpf, rather than the over-fuelling method, but it is more expensive so none of the mainstream manufacturers do this.

There are 3 types of dpf regeneration, the active one is as blackwolf explains above, there is a passive one that just happens if the dpf gets sufficiently hot , generally on a long high speed drive, the third is a manual regen that can be triggered by a diagnostic tool.
The passive one does not involve the injection of fuel on the exhaust stroke so no engine oil dilution, the active and manual ones do.

The ECU monitors the number of active regens and calculates the potential oil dilution and then when it passes a threshold of 7% triggers the oil service message to come on.

So if you changed your oil recently, reset the oil service counter after doing so, and the oil service message is not showing then all is ok.

I used to get a strong toxic smell in the cab during an active regen, which was caused by an exhaust blow between the turbo & dpf. Since its been fixed I only know an active regen is happening because my scanguage tells me the exhaust gas temperature is around 600°C.

Sorry about hijacking the thread.
JPE, mines started to do the same, even on the motorway.
What was the fix?

Hi Marks Landy,
The fix was I took it to my local garage & asked them to do a smoke test to see if there was an exhaust blow somewhere around the engine bay. I thought maybe the exhaust manifold was leaking. The smoke test confirmed there was a leak but they couldn't tell exactly where without taking the heat shield off, so I left it with them. The leak turned out to be between the turbo & dpf. They fitted a new gasket between the dpf & turbo & clamped them back together & no problems since.

Part 27 in the diagram below, but of course you may be leaking somewhere else, or as is the way with defenders this might not be your problem at all.

Good to know how the regen works, it happened again the day after but I’m putting it down to being in 1st & 2nd all the time with the state of Guinea’s roads.
Now in Sierra Leone & the roads are excellent.

Simplest way to tell a regen is going on is just to listen to the injection noise as you're driving along. During a regen when they inject on the exhaust stroke they're I jecting with no cylinder pressure, which sounds more tinny and "bright" for want of a better word. Easiest to tell when you tip in and tip out on the throttle.
