Con”fuse”ion!
My reverse light isn’t working. Checked the bulb and that’s ok so I went to check the fuse. Manual says it’s fuse 10 and a 10A fuse, but when I open the fuse box cover, it looks like this and fuse 10 is a 20A fuse. I can’t see any other symbol that is for the reversing light either. It’s a 2013 HT. Help!

If you have a tester check for a 12v positive at the reverse light fitting with the ignition on, if you have 12v then the fuse is OK and it is the negative that has failed, and then its likely the reverse switch on the gearbox that is at fault, or the wiring between the switch and lamp fitting DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I don't know why but switch failure seems common on Puma models. I had to replace mine a little while ago and described it here:

It's either because "they don't make them like they used to" (the mantra - one of several - of we old folk), or it is because the spirit of Lucas, Prince of Darkness, lives on in the Puma Defender as an heritage feature.

Thanks all, but does anyone know where the fuse is?

Found the fuse, under the seat. Belled out fine. Got 0V at the bulb testing between the plug and the cross member bolts. Would that be a good enough earth back?

Hi

ignition on, check for 12v between earth and the fuse holder just to be sure you have some volts at that point,

if you have but you have none at the reverse light plug it suggests a break in the route from the fuse holder to the plug which would be unusual.

just to be sure that the reverse switch is OK (ignition off, car in reverse) using the tester continuity test, check for continuity from the reverse light plug -ve connection to earth, it should be zero resistance (buzzer buzzes if it has one the same reading as if you connect the two tester wires to each other) with the gear stick in neutral it should show infinite resistance, same reading as if the wires on the tester are not connected. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Hi

this is for a 2.4 but be surprised if 2.2 was different and shows the fuse as fuse F14 ID 10 under the dash as per your first post, not under the seat DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Reverse switch feed on a 2.2 is Fuse F10 under the seat.

2.4 and 2.2 electrical wiring is quite different, 2.2 has a large underseat fuse box.

Highly likely to be a failed reverse switch - lots of posts on here with exactly the same happening.

You can get 12V showing up at the reverse light connector on a multimeter, but the switch contacts have gone high resistance so virtually no current flows and the bulb won't light.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

This is what’s throwing me. That fuse on my under dash fuse box is the wipers/washers. I haven’t actually checked this fuse though, so worth a look. I suppose the sticker could be wrong?

Thanks Martin. I’ve got 0V at the switch connectors and the fuse continuity is OK. Am I right in saying that all that is left is damage to the cable?

It's listed as F10 on both my 2012 and 2016 wiring diagrams, there's a slightly chance it's different on your 2013 but unlikely.

F12 is/should be wipers.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
