Struggling to see banging one end with a hammer is going to achieve much with a flexible hose on the other end?

It works because you only need need to apply a "light tap", not beat seven bells out of it!

It is however evident that many users do beat the living daylights out of them, which I find a little intriguing since you fill it with light oil or WD40 to act as a diluting and flushing agent. If you were to beat that hard enough it could ignite (like diesel in a compression ignition engine)., which would probably achieve the same effect but might be undesirably spectacular.

What I can say is that used as instructed by the manufacturer it does generally work pretty well, and even though it only takes an hour or so to remove a Defender propshaft, completely strip and clean both UJs, re-grease and reassemble, it is quicker to blast some fresh lube through with the device.

On mine, I wipe the grease nipple first with a disposable glove as I usually use those and or a cloth.
I free up the little ball bearing in the nipple with a little bradawl tool, then attach the coupling before greasing.

I find that it helps free it up, prior to greasing and makes greasing less likely to send grease out the sides or to pop off the coupler.

Though I use a narrow locking coupler.

If the nipple is shot, ball bearing missing or nipple itโ€™s self missing then you can simply replace them.

Mine had missing grease nipples, at one time something quite common with Pumas which others had found to occur.

Early Pumas have 3 nipples per prop shaft, one per UJ each end and one on the centre splined slider.
Later Pumas I believe only have a nipple on each UJ each end and not on the slider in the middle.

Itโ€™s not unknown for the nipple to be in situ and the ball bearing and little spring inside to disappear too this letting in all sorts which will degrade the roller bearings and bearing cups.
This is what I had and a bearing cup filled with water and the roller bearings int hat one UJ cup disintegrated into nothing.
Happens after wading a shallow Ford some years ago.

I grease them now about every 3 months where I can and use Morris K48 grease. No Guts, No Glory.
