I assume they are talking about the fact they have adjusted the steering stops in so now the tyres hit on full turn. Easy to adjust if you want.

ok cheers it's due its MOT soon anyway so will get the local garage to have a look or take it to a specialist as it just sounds like it's grinding parts up on full lock.

In theory it should fail the MOT if the tyres are catching. Mine doesn’t fail, but he mentions it every year.

Easy to check, turn your steering on full lock and see if the tyre is making contact with the radius arm. If it does it will have polished the arm in the place it is making contact. Turn the wheel to full lock on the other side and check that for the same. As Landy Andy says, it’s simple to adjust the stops for you or any garage. Adjusting the stops so contact is no longer made on full lock will stop the rubbing but will increase turning circle.
Find it odd that the guys doing the work did not do the adjustment for you. A search on here will give plenty of how to info for adjusting bump stops. Edit - Oops should have said lock not bump Just had a look at the picks of your truck on another thread. Not a surprise they are rubbing, you have moved from what looks like AT’s to much wider MT’s . Who carried out the suspension works? Presumably new, wider wheels and tyres fitted too?
Anyone that's competent enough to fit suspension upgrades should be more than competent enough to diagnose and adjust the steering lock stops. If they're not, then I'd be taking it elsewhere to get the work checked over.... |

To give them their due it was the final road test (it had spent all its time in workshops getting the bits fitted) on the day I was due to pick her up when they discovered the grinding. Sounds like a straightforward enough job for local garage (I'm not that competent unfortunately) to sort out as I want to get out and drive her some more! |

I wouldn't be letting anyone work on my car that couldn't sort Defender tyre rubbing at full lock in 10 minutes (and that includes walking into the workshop twice because they picked up the wrong size spanners the first time!).
Can't remember if the bolt and locknut are 17mm or 19mm..... |

It is rather worrying that a firm undertaking such a major package of modifications, especially in safety-critical areas, would consider handing it back in this condition. Tyre rub on full lock should have been addressed as a core part of fitting such oversized wheels, it shouldn't be an afterthought. It also something so simple and fundamental it is hard to understand how it could be ignored. Some other aspects (such as the top damper mounts mentioned in one of the other threads) also raise doubts about the competence of the convertors.
I'm afraid it rather makes me wonder whether it is the vehicle or the owner who has been "tweaked". |

Well I dont feel cheated if thats what you mean! Road testing was done at the very end (literally the day of pickup) of the process as the vehicle was stripped essentially in plaxe and then all the many parts added.See picture below early on in the build. The quality of the work is outstanding. Took it stime and comms could have been better at times but all in all I'm a very happy camper without all the doom and gloom coming from some quarters on here.
Click image to enlarge Sounds like a pretty simple thing with the bump stops and with the Terrfirma parts that have been highlighted thats the first I've heard about them so will do some more research. It's now a unique model (only Utility they have converted in UK so in a class of 1 so far) that will hold its value very well I believe. |

Yes. Very simple to adjust just need a spanner, and reall easy for the garage to do if they use a ramp as it will put it at a nice working height.

It will be lockstops rather than bumpstops but is a very easy and quick adjustment.
You have created a very striking Defender and are clearly delighted with it, and ultimately that is what matters. I hope it continues to give you max pleasure for many years. I bet your grin when driving is as wide as the tyres! |

I think you need to consider that it may not be anything to do with stops, and it's just the power steering fighting against full lock. My 1993 90 makes a noise on full lock. So does my 1987 110. And the 2 year old Mercedes van that I drive at work does, but to a significantly lesser degree. Barely perceptible but I can hear it, and see the extra vibration in the door mirrors.
