Stainless into aluminium, that's living life on the edge even with paste! If I were ever seized by a compulsion to fit CP I think I would simply rivet it, either with sealed breakstem ("pop") rivets or more likely traditional solid rivets. It is probably just as easy to remove subsequently as it would be screwed (and much easier than stainless that has welded itself into aluminium threaded inserts), plus the holes are smaller. Sealed breakstem rivets would make more sense on black CP since they are available in black, solid rivets would have more of a heritage feel on self-colour CP. |

I know that you've been scarred for life by your Patriot rack experience but if properly prepared then there really is no issue with stainless fixings Darren

Length of rivnuts? I think they're all a pretty standard length and anything off the shelf will suit the thickness of Land Rover panels. If you mean the bolts, then probably 15-20mm. Thanks all. I am now on the fence with rivnuts or rivets! I will wait for the panels and then spend some time debating it with myself! Many thanks as always for the advice, much appreciated.
Cheers. |

Sounds like glue is still a nice solution.. no holes, no corrosion.. fit and forget (and better forget that it had been glued) 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

OK, so I am aware I am in danger of over-complicating this! but I just want the best result with the ease of removing if I ever need to replace or refurb.
Would it not be OK to use the rubber (well) rivnuts with the brass insert, as I understand it they are good for mixed materials? and should, I think be strong enough to hold the plate OK. All these fixings are new to me, so I promise after this question I will just make a decision!! (much to your delight) Cheers. |

Brass rvitnuts with the rubber will sit proud of the mount a touch. I've used them to secure the arch liners on my other car where that didn't matter and they were better than the screw fit rivets

Rivets are easy and quick if you are leaving the chequer plate on. Screws are better if you anticipate having to remove it often.

How often do people with CP actually remove it?
(For that matter, why would you remove it?) |

Agreed, I think I might just go down the rivet route, sems quick, easy and does the job well.
Many thanks. |

^^ probably they have to remove them to deal with corrosion issues since they were improperly fitted in the first place.
My 90 has them fitted to the rear, just aft of the rear wheel. Only 5x5 inches, but I wish they were just glued in, as probably by now I would have already removed them. Mine are installed with regular aluminium pop rivets. Family member has an ex utility 90. He has his wing top and bonnet plated. His seems to be with stainless rivets, ok for the bonnet since it is a Puma. So far no signs of corrosion in wing tops though. I believe they were fitted by the special vehicle department. He also wish to have them removed... but the amount of holes to deal with.... sigh. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

If you go for the rivnut/nutserts i would suggest M6 would be too large assuming you're considering countersunk fasteners. The head would be quite large. I'd be tempted to drill more but smaller holes suitable for c/s M4 fasteners if you have that option. |
