Trailer electrics
Hi all,

just picked up a new (to me) trailer and all the electrics work but the indicators seem a bit slow and also the dash trailer light varies between very dim and barely on at all as the indicators flash.

The vehicle itself has full LED lights and the trailer is incandescent so I am making the assumption it's that combination that's the issue although I won't be able to check earths etc until the weekend.

Assuming it is the lighting type combination what is my best course of action?

Thanks in advance....

The usual solution is an adjustable flasher relay that allows for the variable load of some LED and some incandescent bulbs. Checking the earths is always a good call, though. Darren

normal filament bulbs will always appear to flash slower than LED lights (well flashing at the same rate but with a lag) due to the warm-up time of the bulbs. There is nothing wrong here, just how it works.

Assuming the vehicle has the correct flasher unit fitted to go with the LED lights, there should be an adjuster on it which allows you to tweak the current at which the trailer warning light illuminates. You can have a tweak of this with/without the trailer connected to see if that solves the issue. From memory I think you are meant to turn it back so the warning light has just gone off without the trailer connected.

Cheers,

And just to add to that - make sure you do the adjustment with the engine running. Dave

Agree with all of the above, and the reason for adjustment with the engine running is due to the slightly increased voltage with the alternator running and engine running.
