I was surprised to see both 17" and 18" steel wheels. I've never really considered tyre options for anything other than 16" before, so what are folks thoughts on the best long term option? Darren

Not sure why they didn't offer the 18" alloy with BFG tyres. That's the combination I'd prefer. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

Those alloys look really spindly and it would be great to have a choice of a white steel or lighter chunkier silver alloy. Really not a fan of dark wheels and black tyres. Too much like black balloons, like the way a child would draw/colour in wheels
 Personal choice is a wonderful thing

interesting both the 17 and 18" options both run 70profile tyres...265's on the 17s and 255s' on the 18s.Llooking at the specs the 17's are 31.6" and the 18s' are 32.1" so probably worth going for the 18's contrary to my initial concerns over lack of sidewall height etc.

I'm thinking 18s on steel and sprayed white. Not the most original thought but with a white roof and a green paint finish....

You talking 1/4” or 6mm difference in clearance. That’s less than the difference between a new or worn tyre. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

true - but why not have it if there is practically no penalty in side wall height as you would normally get running a 1" bigger rim?
I'd venture that availablity of tyres going forwards will be better in 18" as that appears to be what all the jap pickups run these days. sticking with 17s you might find a 265/75 squeezes in there which would be better again... but is a very uncommon tyre size so limited availability on models etc. |

Incidentally, at least some of the prototypes being shown on your were on 285/70/17. A much bigger tyre all around, and contributes to the stocky looks. Iwonder why this isn’t an option and what a Grenadier on these smaller sizes actually looks like. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

17” tires are better for airing down — more sidewall on an otherwise same-sized tire. Availability is also a big plus.
It will depend on the use case — international travel will likely prefer 17s. Users in developed areas are probably going to like the 18” better, but availability in remote places of 18” tires is not as good as 17”. |

Mike_e spotted that the sidewall height difference between the 2 is not much. I don’t think there’s really anything to choose between them off road.

Thanks bluest, and thanks Mike_e for pointing that out. I thought it was more but it's good to know it's not a huge difference. But still, even that 1/3" of sidewall can translate into greater deformation off road over sharp rocks and ridges. It's not a lot, but it can mean the difference between a puncture or a tire deforming around a point when aired down. Probably only matters once every 100 years or so though  (In other words, I don't think it matters nearly as much day to day as some folks might say, but since I have the option, I'm going 17s).
@Supacat, thanks for sharing that one with body-matched white wheels (that may be the "mushroom colour?). Looks sharp regardless! |
