Defender security
Hi all,

I’ve recently just joined the defender gang. I have bought a 2008 defender 90 and I am concerned about keeping it safe, I do not think that is enough to keep it safe. I park it outside my house on the road, sometimes near my house, sometimes not.

It doesn’t have an alarm, central locking or a built in steering wheel lock. I have purchased a steering wheel lock but I am not sure this will be enough. What sort of other deterrences do people recommend?

Welcome to the forum. Drop a hello up and some photo's (away from your house!!) we all love a photo.

With regard to the above, it's very, very well covered in the forum. Do a search using the search function above for security and do some reading through and you'll start to get an idea of the "layers" approach.

Once you've had a read shout if anything doesn't make sense. But the search function is your friend for this one. Thumbs Up

Take a look at this site...

https://www.landroverdefendersecurity.com/

As previously stated you need 'layers'... some visible and some not.

As mentioned above and like when hiking in the mountains, layers are key Thumbs Up

What you decide upon is obviously up to you, but I would suggest not sharing the details around too much. The good news is that as with the Defender itself, security is utterly adaptable to your own circumstances and requirements.

How about that for a vague answer Rolling Eyes

The first step you have already taken, being aware and thinking about it Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Hiya, I have just invested in an X Defender Gear Stick Lock for my 110. I'm in no doubt that a very determined thief would get it off given the time but it serves as a visual deterrent and it stows away easily in the centre cubby.

You fit it with 5th gear selected and it mean that it is impossible to change gear or shift to neutral. Certainly worth a look, we chose it because of the cost, bulk and complication of pedal locks.

Cheers, Martin

Just trying to get my head round this ^^^^^ Low range, anti-stall, bit of throttle and away you go isn't it?

Would locked in neutral be better so no possibility of any drive????

The lock goes over the range lever and the main gear lever so it’s locked in high range, 5th gear. So, you can’t drive it and you can’t tow it…I hope.

I don't have a drive or footpath so parked on the road outside the house but I have Skytag live ,A peddle lock, Clifford alarm and this what the last owner made which is great for nipping in the garage whilst paying for fuel etc as a deterrent as well as locking the wheel it just rests at the side so easy reach to quickly put on and take off.

Towing it would be a little easier that you probably want to know, however it will act as good deterrent and would hopefully make the scumbags look for easier pickings.

It is, sadly, not easy to make any classic LR difficult to tow away. The most effective methods are to block it in, or to fit a good quality wheel-clamp. Most transmission-based devices are depressingly easy to circumvent.

Any security device is an uneasy compromise between making the vehicle harder to pinch and making the vehicle unusable for you. Devices which are difficult or time-consuming to fit and remove tend, after a while, to be left off, and that becomes self-defeating.

That's odd. When I copy and re-post your text link between new 'IMG' tags, it appears.

You haven't inadvertently ticked the 'Disable BBCode in this post' on the 'Post a reply' page, by any chance? Darren
