LOL but then third gear kicks like a bitch Will also try Motul Gear 300 next week (solved synchro probs in my Audi). Fingers crossed... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Yes, I'd be interested to find out if the fluids make a difference with this box.

It's only 6 mths old but I'm fairly sure a LR mechanic in Munich got off and 1/2 trashed the gearbox. I complained about his work when he failed to fix the handbrake (three times) and took 5 days total! I suspect he "got even" with me on his last "test drive". I haven't regretted many things in my life but that was definitely one of them
I'm a bit reluctant to go to another dealer now - to explain (own fault?) - and if they want to change the gearbox I have to worry even more about the quality of their work So for now I'm seeing if I can get round it and if it gets too bad I'll have to try another dealer (30 miles away). Call LR customer service. No big deal to exchange the gearbox. It is even on the workshop manual. Get everything new (probably remanufactured) from flywheel to hand brake. You have enough eveidence and complaints already Puma 110" SW

Hello ZeDefender
My gearbox is also disappointing in the way in changes gear. Going up into second and third when you try and a do a fast change the synchro,s don’t appear to work properly and you get a crunch as it goes into gear. It only happens on 2nd and 3rd gears. If you change gear slowly and wait for the engine speed to match the road speed then its a smooth change. I have considered taking it back under warranty, but don’t want to end up with a replacement second hand gearbox. From what is said on this forum, it could be a common problem with the defender 6 speed gearbox, and may not be resolved by changing the gearbox. A different gear oil may improve it, but cant chance it while it’s under warranty. My defender 90 is just 12 months old and has done 5000 miles. 2004 Freelander TD4 Sport 2010 Defender 90 Hartop |

... and THAT'S why there are forums! Thanks for that - it's reassuring (perhaps not good for you, though) to know you are in the same boat. Have you had yours since new? I guess you didn't cripple your own gears so have you noticed it getting worse over time? With LR dealers "dealing" with problems by just saying "it's a Defender, what did you expect?", other owner's experiences (e.g. yours) are incredibly useful artillery. I'm going to change the gear oil anyway as I don't reckon LR could tell... but MK has a good point (thanks for the encouragement) and if the oil doesn't make a big difference I'm going to grow some balls and go after LR Germany (albeit in my pidgin German...) I'm on my second gearbox and it's still a bitch at times changing gear. I'm going to try and get the clutch changed before the warranty expires as it's not right. Slow and steady with the gear changes is the best way to go 90% of the time I've found. Don't force it into gear, just clutch in, gentle pressure on the stick and as the revs drop it'll just slide in... most of the time. |

Hello ZeDefender
My Defender was an exdemo, had just over 1000 miles when I got it. The synchros in the gearbox don’t appear any different now, to when I bought it. I thought at the time it could be down to a new and tight gearbox, that would improve with age (like a good malt whisky), but so far it does not seem to have improved. But since its mostly motorway mileage, there has not been a lot of gear changes. I have 2 years warranty left so will leave it until there are more miles on the clock before considering talking to the dealer about it. Be interested to see the results of the oil change. 2004 Freelander TD4 Sport 2010 Defender 90 Hartop |

@Warren - thanks, that's why I'm reluctant to push for a new gearbox - out of the frying pan...
On a positive note, I've been changing gear like you suggest today - and 90% of the time it's okay @Laundry_man: I guess no-one deliberately trashed your gearbox in the demo period so perhaps the ape-mechanic here didn't do more damage than just speed up the natural process. Oil change next week and see if I can live with it. I hope I'm not being too hopeful - wife has an Audi A2 with a knackered 2nd synchro and now the Motul oil makes it driveable... Well my 90XS was also an ex-demo having done about 900 m when i took delivery. ALL gear changes are fine EXCEPT for 2nd to 3rd. I don't like being behind a queue or leading one so I use the full rev range. If I try a sports change i.e.: quick then I only have a problem with 2nd to 3rd as if the synchros can't keep up and this is ONLY on the up-change. There is no transmission snatch etc: To get rid of this problem I just slow down the gear shift from 2nd to 3rd i.e.: move stick out of 2nd and feel it into 3rd rather than push it into 3rd. Has been the same since I got it and have now done 16,000m in 19mths.
I think it is all down to the changes to the Puma gear box - dropping 1st and 2nd down a notch to improve a smoother take-off when towing and leaving a bigger gap from 2nd to 3rd that the synchro cannot quit cope with unless you slow the change time to allow the engine revs to drop more than usual to allow the synchro to do it's job properly. Since I use Shell Getriebeöl EP 75W-90 + LM Getriebeöl Additive I do not feel the grinding in 2nd anymore. Puma 110" SW

Think I can live with 2nd to 3rd now (will take some practice though). Hopefully 1st to 2nd will improve with the new oil... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I did read the Motul has been used to tame the MT-83 box, but that 300 looks serious!!!
Am I correct in thinking Castrol's recent 'rebranding' of some of their products (as shown on TOPIx) could have been a cunning plan to change the product without screaming 'we've made a mistake'? |
