Sadly there is no magical solution to a filter which has been fitted by a person lacking in brains but over-provided with brawn, as yours appears to have been. If a 6-point socket (or the wheel nut wrench) won't shift it, you may end up having to destroy it to get it off.
It is possible to unbolt the fuel filter/cooler housing from the block to tackle it on the bench, or it is possible to replace the housing with the later Defender type (or Transit type) which has a metal canister rather than the plastic thing with the renewable element. The plastic thing is not meant to be tightened much, little more than hand-tight, as I recall. Sadly there are many people who love to overtighten things to a ridiculous degree. |

What sort of tool is required to remove it even if I destroy it?
Also, the later defender metal casing model you just mentioned; is that a straight swap? Or the cooler housing needs to be replaced as well? |

My 2.2, MY12 is with that type of filter and I had the exact same problem as you describe.
I was using a 6 sided socket, and was afraid I was going to shear the bottom off. I also have the belt oil filter wrench, exactly as yours. In the end I decided to use the 6 sided wrench and the belt simultaneously (it was a circus type of job, playing with hands and feet at the same time), but in the end I got it off without breaking it. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Have you tried 6 point socket as above?

Yes I tried with the 6 sided socket… that didn’t work and only got me to damage the bolt… it’s now rounded and totally unremovable with anything else than a wrench.
I might try another wrench, the one with spikes biting into the oil filter casing and see if that works; otherwise I will cut it off. |

Or more likely https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-77592-Filt...&psc=1 Plus a breaker bar, with slow increased pressure. I use the latter one on stuck metal filters with a breaker bar and it’s never failed, just carefully take up the slack and it I’ll bite tighter as pressure is applied. Never had to use on a plastic filter cover but I expect it to come loose before it is crushed. Ps. But buy a replacement casing first. |

I had the same problem when I first changed my filter. I bought one of these sockets designed for the job. It seems to work by putting pressure on the flats of the 27mm "bolt" rather than the six points.

Thanks for the links. I just ordered them. I also just got a replacement casing.
My fear is that if I break the current casing, I won’t be able to unscrew whatever is left in the housing thread! Fingers crossed 🤞 |

I wouldn’t break it I would drill hole through it (both sides) so you can pass a bar through it, if you have to. But I’m sure by degreasing it then using tools ypu will be able to remove.

I had the same problem, so I bought a new casing and asked a mechanic to bash the old one off with a hammer and chisel. Just a few minutes work and all's fine now. Peter
