Thanks for all the ideas and recommendations.
Decided to go with the bushpig as its regular shape and carry bag should make it easy enough to pack, also the option to store the charcoal in it while travelling means it will hopefully be as space efficient as a folding unit. Thanks Keith |

We bought a steel laser cut folding version, which to be frank is great but so heavy i practically need a penman just to take it away with me! |

Very robust construction, packs to nothing but heavy. https://www.amazon.de/Fennek-Hexagon-Fire-...Q&th=1 This is another option, this is what I got. I like that you can do a serious camp fire going safely, but it does take a lot of coal just to make a bbq on the plate that comes as an accessory. Also packs small and compact, about the size of small laptop bag, but when you try to lift the bag you're in for a shock..

As an option just to give you some warm fire (not cook food). These tiny folding fire pit's are small enough to fit in your cubby box. You can find them on Amazon.

These Notebook BBQ's fold flat and are easy to pack. Work well for two people and can also use as a fire pit after you've had your BBQ. Happy with mine for easy use.

Aluminium beer keg with the top cutout. Great for carrying as it has built in handles. Throws out all the heat when it gets going too. Put a nights worth of logs inside it when travelling too.

I'm really happy with my bush-pig.
It's solid, well made & the extensions each end are well worth getting. Also my petromax dutch oven sits perfectly on the ledge. Oh & it all packs up in a rectangular bag which makes it easy to load. Highly recommend the Boab Braai portable BBQ and fire pit. I have had one for over a decade now and it is fantastic. Rugged as and packs away in to itself and in to a wolf box for stowage whilst travelling.
Great for BBQs, slow one pot cooking and as a fire pit with or without marsh mallows 
The only maintenance it requires is a clean and oiling after use and before storing. This summer it had a wire brush and a repaint with stove black. Good for another decade now...
Love it so much that I don't have a BBQ at home, the braai is more than adequate. It may not be the flashiest of the options but it is worth every penny. https://www.4x4overlander.com/product/braai/ |
