One piece half shafts
Ladies / Gents

I am slightly embarrassed by this one but having decided today to fit my 1 piece half shafts which have been in the garage for a while I noticed that they come with 4 paper gaskets. Should I be fitting 2 either side or are there 2 extras in case of breakage / tearing?

Also should the bolts have spring washers fitted as mine don’t have washers in the pack nor are they fitted to the original set up.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

They should only need one gasket each, so you've got a couple of spares.

Spring washers are not a standard part, although they are a good idea. They remove the temptation to use thread lock, which can be a bad idea as there are many stories of bolts sheared off in the hub.

When I did mine, I used galvanised cap head bolts and springs washers, torqued to 65Nm:

Unless you're of the opinion that spring washers do basically nothing Wink

I believe they come with threadlock from the factory?

Thanks for that.

I’ll make sure I don’t rip any gaskets then. Fortunately mine came with the cap head bolts from IRB.
Will have to see about getting spring washers then.

A good video on the topic of lock washers. Language NSFW

I find the channel very amusing, and he is knowledgable engineer. It takes a while to get used to his turns of phrase though. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
