Terrain Response without off-road pack options?
Hi All,
Sorry for a very basic question, I'm specifying a New Defender and struggling to find an answer.

Are you able to manually select terrain type without any of the optional off-road packs? ie. Without the off-road pack or advanced off-road capability pack, can I select snow / sand / mud & ruts etc?

I assume that this is standard on all vehicles from entry level up.. but it's hard to tell if this only comes as part of the terrain response 2 option.

Thanks

Yes, all of the cars come with the basic TR system as standard kit, just you don’t have the option to configure it to your own desired settings. You also can spec the locking rear diff without the other capabilities and just have the ediff and the basic TR.
Even if you have the TR2 system you don’t have to use the pre-programmed terrain settings, just leave it in Comfort, engage low range, on air suspended cars raise the height to offroad height if you need to and engage Hill Descent Control on down slopes if you need that too. You can even drive it as a manual gearbox car by moving the selector to the left into “S” or Commandshift and manually sequentially shifting up and down the box. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Coil suspension limits off-road options
I’ve been running through the off-road options and have found the coil suspension option does not allow you to select the ‘Advanced off-road pack. That means you can’t permanently lock the centre or rear diff.

The only option on coil is the standard off-road pack. That comes with the active electronic diff and torque vectoring via breaking.

My question is, how much better is this electronic active diff feature over a standard AWD? For example, driving in sand is an AWD killer, so will the active diff option really work better or is the only way forward to lock the diffs? In that case you have to have air suspension to get it.

IiRC you can permanently lock any of the diffs on the new Defender, they are electronic and lock and unlock as the terrain requires. My 110 has only the centre diff which is standard on all of the new Defenders, but I had the ediff on my last RRS and it would fully lock up on the road if the conditions required it to, it didn’t just work off-road when a TR program was selected or low range was selected. I have the configurable TR on my 110 but not the full Monty Off Road Pack and while I can have automatic or locked

I know someone with Centre and rear diffs so will ask.

** Edit - just had a reply and the ediff can also be set to permantly locked**

Just checked my car and I can permanently lock the centre diff in the configuration so you can probably do it to the rear too as it shows “differentials” (in plural) on the screen

That’s interesting Tim as I thought the Defender build configurator allows only Customisable e-diffs in the advanced off-road pack?

Open diffs - standard
E-diffs + torque vectoring by braking - off-road pack
Configurable diffs, ATPC, terrain response 2 - Advanced off-road pack.

All Defenders have the locking centre. The locking rear is an option, it can be specified on its own or as part of the off road pack. The advanced off road pack is another option that can be specified independently (or enabled aftermarket for a fraction of the cost) and is what gives you the option to manually configure whatever diffs you have.

Mine is base-spec but I optioned the rear diff on its own, I didn’t want the silly 230v plug in the boot.

Nope, I can’t find just the rear ediff option without selecting advanced off-road pack configurable terrain response.

Perhaps this is something the dealer can do?

Also can you expand on the possibility of adding the advanced off road pack later at a fraction of the cost? At the dealer or independent specialist?

Thanks
Glenn

It may be because of the spec that you have chosen that it isn't available separately, some of the option combinations are weird, like if you want to spec the two rear tow hooks it says it is a £100 option, but if you tick it the price goes by £1250 because they are only available as part of the Bright Exterior Pack

This is what I see on my build, which is a 110 D200 SE the rear diff option is available by itself

Also the option of adding the advanced off road pack later at a fraction of the cost, have a look at this webpage https://lr-retrofits.co.uk/l663-defender-1 This is an option as he has worked out how to switch the options on which a dealer can't do after you have bought it. This sort of thing has been possible for years with Discos and FFRR's, you could buy an IID tool and turn the options on yourself but on newer models the coding of the cars has changed and at the moment only Mo at LR Retrofits has worked out how to do it. Cheers Ian

Cheers Ian.

I’ll have another mess around with the configurator. Ahhhh found it. It is on the capability tab next to the pack options.

Can I check if you have this e-diff option you can lock it though having bought just this option? Or is it only ‘active’ - automatic?

Thanks for the link - that’s quite a price difference. Very Happy

Glenn

I have specced the E diff on my build but unfortunately I don't get the car until October 1st Confused I haven't specced the advanced off-road capability pack though, I may add it at a later date via LR Retrofits or wait until the IID Tool is available for the L663 Whistle Thumbs Up Cheers Ian

The ediff is not something that can be enabled after build, the hardware isn’t there so you have to modify the rear drive to add the mechanicals. Someone has done it but it was hugely expensive and there are questions about what adding one does for your warranty….. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Ian, I wonder if you’ll get electronic/software updates for that part of the system from LR if it was added as a retrofit? The mothership will know the spec of your car from the factory or LR upgrades I guess, but it won’t recognise anything else. Just a thought?

I've had four Discos and a FFRR that were under warranty and I've 'switched stuff on' and it never caused a problem so I'm not worried about it, that is if I get it done Wink Whistle Laughing Cheers Ian
