I was / am thinking about purchasing some snowchains, if I only purchased one set which wheels should I fit them too and which chains should I purchase. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Depends if your going up or down a hill really, although in general you will want to fit them to the fronts. I have a full set of 4, the reason being is that if one breaks then i can still use 2 to get me home, if you only have 2 and you have gone anywhere off the beaten track and one snaps then you really could be in trouble. Just depends if you just want to use them to pop to tesco for bread and milk or be able to go anywhere you want.

Just out of interest, the original equipment Land Rover Defender wheel chains (Part No: STC7664) are made in Germany by RUD. They are identical to the RUD-matic Classic V chains. The Puma Owners Manual says put them on the front wheels, if you only have one pair.

I was luck enough to get a good eal on a set of four new Pewag Austro Super-V chains.
Bloody expensive buying them new, £180 for a single chain! £720 for four is big money! |

A couple of people used the snow socks on there cars last winter, they were good for getting you moving but it didn't take long for holes to appear as soon as there was a glimps of Tarmac. Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

fine on a fiesta to get you home, but not on a vehicle with any kind of torque or weight. |

I too would use a single pair on the front (Pewag for heavy duty use would be my recommendation - bloody expensive but you'll probably never need another set) - as for steering and most braking effort, weight of engine etc. There was a post on this subject last winter to which there was quite a bit of discussion - one thing I remember was whether you intended to tow.....somebody recommended putting them on the rear - I guess 'cos it's near the fulcrum point - suggest you search (all) the other posts.
Ideally use four so you can get the torque and grip to all four wheels I can't see the snowsocks lasting very long - probably ok for light occasional use |
