Springs vs Dampers
Hello,

Looking at taking some of the harshness out of my 90. I was wondering which would be a good way to tackle this, Alive comfort springs with standard dampers or stick with standard springs and go for Fox dampers?

Has anyone fitted RRC springs front and back on their car?

Thank you.

I'd say change the springs but keep the dampers. However, that does depend on how old the dampers are. If they're more than 50-60k miles then I'd renew them too, although I'd still stick with the standard ones. In my experience, the standard set up is very good when new but tails off significantly when worn, which I think is partly why people rave about 'uiprated' dampers. Darren

Check the table on this site:

http://www.red90.ca/rovers/springinfo.html

Look at the column 'Rate". The lower the rate, the softer the spring. But when fitting softer spring, the Defender could sit lower, unless you compensate with a longer spring, or 'lift' it back up to normal ride height by using spacers or a combination of spacers and isolators.

On my 90CSW, I installed NRC2119 at the rear and added an isolator - ANR2938. My 90 is sitting a bit lower than standard at the back.

On a friend 90HT, I installed what I think are 572315, but needed to add 25mm spacer and an isolator. His is also sitting lower now, albeit both Defenders are sitting more level, as usually a bit higher on the rear.

On the HT, the difference was huge, and the ride is much more comfortable.

The shocks are standard for both 90s. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thank you for the replies, I was thinking the 133lb on the front and the 170lb on he rear but there are a few different lengths and wondered what people had used, don’t want it to be any higher as it won’t fit in the car park! I suppose if it ends up being a bit lowered then it can be raised with the spring isolators.

Thanks

NRC4304 (rate of 170lb/in) on the rear of a Td5 90 (CSW but without the rear seats) sits a bit higher than 1" than stock.
