Do not follow this link if you are easily offended or upset by the vandalization of an early Land-Rover. There is no "unseeing" this once seen!
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334085443607 This is supposedly a 1952 Series One with "improvements", which seem to amount to a new coil sprung chassis (yet still apparently with a 2610**** chassis number), diesel engine, R380 gearbox, LT230 transfer box, coil sprung wide axles, modern steering set-up, first registered in 2015, yet astonishingly it appears to have retained its original registration number. I cannot think of any legitimate way that this is not on a "Q"-plate. Furthermore it is being advertised by someone too stupid to fit the tilt correctly (one of my pet hates). I cannot figure out either why there is a hole in the bulkhead in front of the passenger seat, perhaps it is a heater outlet since there appears to be a Defender wing intake on the n/s wing-top. Irrespective of the condition of this vehicle before it was butchered, it seem to me to be a tragic waste. |

The chassis looks more like a shortened Defender (or Disco? - tubular A frame crossmember) chassis than a Series 1. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

There is absolutely zero series one content in the chassis!
Given that it was apparently first registered in 2015, can anyone thing of a legal way it can have avoided a "Q" plate, because i can't? |

and to top it off they want 20k....
I'm in the market for a S1 if a good one at a reasonable price comes before me otherwise picking up a L405 later in the year when im back on dry land to stick the defender into a rebuild state. Galv chassis has been in storage now for 3 years |

The only positive thing you might be able to say about that is that a Series 1 probably didn’t get sacrificed the make it. Looks cobbled together from parts.
The reg number is a red herring, it must have been swapped onto it after it was first registered in 2015. I presume you can’t swap a car off a q-plate onto a private plate so it must have originally had a normal 2015 plate on it. Is it possible this was built and registered new via IVA like a kit car and then had an old plate added via a cherished transfer, like you can with any car? Assuming the chassis was new and a refurbed engine and drive train were fitted would that be sufficient to avoid a q plate after IVA? According to gov.uk it’s never been MOTed either. I dont think it would pass with tyres protruding beyond the arches. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

^^^ Not possible, I'm afraid. The DVLA record states manufactured 1952, first registered 2015. Since that vehicle clearly was not manufactured in '52 fraudulent declarations have been made in order to obtain a V5. It is interesting that it would in theory have had to be inspected by a trustworthy person to get an age-related 1952 registration in 2015, which raises more awkward questions.

Yellow springs and shocks. Sorry, that's a deal breaker for me.

From the pictures looks like it has a Td5 installed, just slightly more power than a 1.6 IOE !
I know it is the owners vehicle and can do what they want but for me, that is the worst you could do to a series 1, but on the plus side with people doing things like this it makes original motors worth more! Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt 1968 88” 2A 200tdi 2002 110 Hardtop |

You know what, each to his own, if somebody what to drive around in a Series 1 body (which looks pretty neat), on a shortened Defender chassis so be it.

Whilst I feel that the loss of originality is a shame, it is indeed entirely the owner's choice how he chooses to chop up the vehicle. We don't know what state it was in to begin with, it may have been unsalvageable.
There are three things that annoy me, though. Firstly is that fact that it is being presented at a 1952 80" Land-Rover, which it isn't. It is a 2015 home-made car and pretending otherwise is wilfully misleading. Secondly is the fact that it appears to have a 1952 registration when it should be on a "Q" plate. I cannot think of a way in which this can have been done which does not involve fraud and dishonesty, and this angers me greatly because it is this kind of illegal behaviour that makes it so difficult legitimately to reregister an old vehicle. Incidentally if anyone can explain how the advertised vehicle could possibly legitimately have that registration I would be fascinated by an explanation. As it is, any future owner could well be in for a nasty and expensive surprise if they drive it anywhere where the Road Traffic Acts apply, probably with little or no come-back against the seller. Thirdly, and this is the worst of all, the person who set it up for the photos is too stupid or idle to fit the tilt correctly, and that is something which has always made my blood boil! |

One of its problems is the 2015 date thats the problem and makes it very odd - if it was a rebuilt road registered trailer (there used to be masses of coil sprung v8 series 1s about after all) it could have been legit under old rules.
The second is the asking price, about £16k too high if its legal, £17 too high if its just spares... |
