That’s a nice thing, looking forward to seeing more of it as you make progress

Bit of a progress update:
I started rebuilding the leaky wheel cylinders, only to discover that I had the wrong kit.. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Nice to see original English seals though. The clutch master cylinder has given up the ghost so as precaution I've removed both pedal boxes so I can rebuild both master cylinders. I'll whip the clutch slave off too at this point so I can be confident of their condition. I thought it prudent to drop the sump and check for nasties, glad I did as this is what I found: Click image to enlarge Squeaky clean! A little gunge in the sump but very minor so the sump had a lick or paint and was refitted. Click image to enlarge I also found a nicely aged rad cap in my boxes of bits, result. Click image to enlarge Hopefully my ever growing parts order will arrive this week so I can get the clutch and brakes working next weekend. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

What nasty did you find when you dropped the sump? I can’t see much on the picture. Is it the lump of sealant? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

No nasties were found thankfully! It was all very clean with no cause for concern. My wording was a bit misleading, sorry! 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Any recommendations for treating and preserving rusty areas? I've heard good things about owatrol oil but have not used it before. Is it much different to boiled linseed oil? I'd like to maintain the patina as far as possible whilst preventing any further corrosion to the bulkhead, rad panel etc.
I'm considering lanoguard or similar for the chassis after a thorough jet washing to remove any dirt/loose paint. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

for Lanoguard. I've done all of mine with it now.

I used to wipe over the bodywork and wheels on mine with ACF50. It’s specifically intended to provide several months of protection.

I'm not convinced old Series Land Rovers kept in, ahem, "patina" condition look good with modern rust treatments on them.
The chassis on the Series One I've owned for 52 years is excellent because - even as a yoof - I kept splashing old engine oil on most of it. (Only most of it, as leaky oilseals did the rest). Squirted it inside the chassis from time to time when I felt like it, as well - it soaks through all the accumulated crud that will inevitably be in there. IMO, there is no "apply once and forget" product you can use on an old chassis. |

Good point re ACF-50 Miles, I have some of that in stock and have been treating any bare steel in the workshop with it, very impressed.
You're quite right slideywindows, I'm quick to dismiss any single application solutions as they usually just cover up the rust. Ultimately I suspect I'll end up stripping and repainting or perhaps even galvanising the chassis but some lanolin or similar in the meantime should keep it in good condition. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

God, I go away for a few weeks and come back to find there's yet another little badass red series. Very nice acquisition Josh! I'd do the same - enjoy as is Stuart
