This week I picked up something rather exciting from West Sussex....
Click image to enlarge More photos to come but she's a 1961, Series 2 109 in military spec having spent its life on Redhill Aerodrome as a fire tender covering only 24k miles. The pump is long gone but the original 'Fire Engineers' badge is still present and the vehicle is remarkably original. The plan is to recommission the brakes and clutch, get it registered with the DVLA and enjoy it as is. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Looks good. I am intrigued to know what it "military spec" about it though, since from the photo I am not seeing any of the expected features.

Jp, I bought it from a chap called Angus if that joins any dots? It's remarkably unmolested so I'm chuffed! If you're able to fill in any bits of it's history I'd be very grateful.
Blackwolf, it's got an 8 blade fan with dual belts, oil cooler, trussed axle and plated main rails which I was led to believe were military features? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Ah, OK. I am not sure that these are specifically military features, although they are found on many mil spec vehicles of that age (along with other features that I don't see on yours).
I suspect that they are features for a permanent heavy payload (i.e., fitted pump) and upgraded cooling for stationary running, rather than mil. You will probably find them on any specialist conversion of that era with fitted equipment which requires the engine to be running when stationary, such as generators, welders, fire pumps, hydraulic service vehicles, bale elevators, cherry-pickers, and so on. An interesting vehicle, I look forward to seeing more pics. |

Yes that joins some dots. Angus was a friend of the bloke I knew. I met him a couple of times, seemed like a nice enough guy. I wondered if he/they had sold it elsewhere back then, and it was for sale again now, but it seems it's stayed with him/them until now. I'll drop you a pm. |

Some more photos as promised:
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge She runs quite sweetly but has no brakes or clutch so they are the first order of business. Seeing as both the brakes and the clutch operate from the same reservoir I presumed a leak in one of the systems was the cause. So up onto axle stands it goes to inspect. Click image to enlarge To my amazement, the original drums (made June 1961) are still present to all four corners as are the Girling wheel cylinders. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The NSF has two leaky wheel cylinders so hopefully they are the cause of the leak. I've stripped them off to rebuild (hopefully) with a genuine Lucas/Girling seal set. Click image to enlarge I'm going to replace all of the hardlines and flexis to be safe, then attempt to bleed the systems. Whilst under the vehicle I checked for axle numbers and sure enough: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Just in case you're not aware that even though it's a shared reservoir the clutch and brake systems are fed from separate sections so in theory a failure in one system doesn't mean a failure in the other.

What's the score with the axle numbers?? Does that prove a date of production, etc ??

You're quite right Scotty, though in my experience the two chambers have a habit of balancing themselves over time!
As for the axle numbers, they start with 1511 which is the prefix of 1961 109 Series 2. This suggests they are original to the vehicle which is a bonus! 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

This was my Fire Engine - also a Fire Armour converion, although with a coach built rear body. Fire Armour became part of HCB Angus in the 60's. Mine was also used at Warton Aerodrome by English Electric, later British Aerospace - hence the yellow cab roof.
I wonder if yours looked like this originally? Does it have a PTO for a pump fitted? Click image to enlarge Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

Ah, I can see a PTO knob in this photo - is the pump still there? Nice find, and the Series Two club rally is at the end of this month so not too long to get it running! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |
