That BMW shifter is hideous. Wish they'd been able to swap it out or better match it with the 4x4 shifter.

I’ve been waiting for this video to decide between the Ineos and the Gren. For me, it’s no contest - they nailed it on the Gren and I’ll be putting my deposit for purchase as soon as I’m allowed to as a Canadian.

I can see some of the hesitations here — some folks don’t like the wheel, others don’t like the airline switches, etc. And much of that is a matter of taste. But from my perspective, I think if you were to get 100 4x4 users — as in, folks whose life depends on a rugged 4x4 vehicle, not folks who just want to be the biggest and baddest off-reader at the local grocery store - — into a room to design the interior of a 4x4, I think for the most part on average they would land awfully close to what we see here.

My only hesitation is that the knob to control the main screen is located such that it would seem to rule out a middle jump seat. I’m hopeful that’s not the case on all cars, but that’s my only quibble. My dogs often like to lie down on the centre console and that knob will get bumped a lot. But that happens on my current vehicle and was way worse on my jeep; the point is it’s a very minor gripe. Overall everything else — from the pre wired switches to the toot button to the Ricaro seats - make this my next, and maybe my last ICE adventure vehicle.

ResGuy, on another video review it’s revealed that the design team did look at options to change the auto selector from the BMW supplied one, but the cost was prohibitive and would only be passed on to the consumer, which they were keen to avoid. I suppose it’s a case of functionality and value over style.

COT, I think the problem with a centre seat is that in Europe there isn’t really that centre-seat or bench seat culture as we traditionally put our gear lever on the transmission tunnel, whilst in the US (or US market destined cars) you put it on the steering rack cowl. A version of this has been done on the New Def, (where they have put the selector on the dashboard), whether that be as a nod to older gen Defs or to appeal to the N American market. But in this configuration on the Gren there will never be a seat there. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Do you means the new Defender and the Grenadier?

I have to agree with the other posters that the shifter looks out of place compared to everything else, but I could live with it, at least until someone produces an after-market one or I invented one myself.

Overall I am very impressed and encouraged by what I am seeing, and especially pleased to see a switch to disable stop/start and a real handbrake not an e-brake. It just gets better and better.

Saw it today at Goodwood. Really really nice in the flesh, imposing and lovely underneath. Proper solid build. I think it’s going to tick a lot of boxes for many on here. The rear doors and load space works really well. Just a proper piece of kit. I didn’t have the disappointment when I met the new Defender for the first time, just excited at what has been done. Interior and switchgear far better in flesh and feels hewn from a single piece of metal. Doors feel very German.

Winch pre fitting has all been thought through well.

For professional users I'm not so sure the abundance of levers and knobs is an advantage. They want to be able to put their experts (in forestry, power distribution, telecom, survey etc) in a vehicle that will take them to their work location with the least amount of dedicated training and effort as possible. If the same capability (or better) can be achieved with automatically controlled difflocks for example that's always going to be preferred to reduce the stress and competence needed of the driver.
There also seems to be limited space up front to put maps, gloves, notebooks, tablets or any other gear those people usually are required to bring with them. A standard van or pick-up is normally better for this. 110 SE D200 MY21 Tasman blue

I don't find the wheel a problem, although it is better in black. I think the pattern of circles across the dash through the wheel adds a roundness which counteracts the otherwise excessive verticality of the design, and one vehicle featuring verticality is quite enough.

I am very puzzled by the amorphous gear shifter though, it really doesn't look right. For some reason it reminds me of those specialist cordless power tools that they make for entertaining women!
