Hi

I guess that the first thing that you need to decide is how you want to use your new project. No point buying things that you won't use.

Have you seen the vehicle builds on the Devon 4x4 website. These cover challenge trucks, green laners and travel.

The write ups and pictures are pretty good

Good luck

if your going challenge route then an auto box is the way to go.
did my convertion about 4 years ago. lifted 3.5efi + 4 speed auto straight from range rover and put in a 90
truck cab. best mod i've did to truck lockers great if you do need them but a good set of tyres first.
again if for challenges then it needs to be 3 winches. alot of folk going the hydrualic route now, whatever winches don't scimp. buy the best you can afford the first time.
am hoping to build new offroader soon myself.
good luck what ever way you go

I think it was Mark Williams who did a build of a 100" hybrid on the discovery channel a few years ago. You can buy the build on DVD. It'll give you a few good ideas and might help you decide what you would like to do different.

If you want to go serious off-road like challenges.
as you don't have axles yet look for some Toyota LC80 axles with lockers. They are strong and 2" wider then LR axles, lower diff ratio so compesates for bigger tyres. I know I dropped some dirty words here but I see this happening in The Netherlands and it looks like it is the way to go.
The a good set off LC80 axles are probaly cheaper then getting LR axles and start shopping with Ashcroft to beef them up to make almost the same strengt as LC80 axles.
Antother option is Volvo Portal axles but they are expensive.

Gearbox hmm. Autogearbox has some advantages but manual gearboxes too. I am going manual at the moment. Specially if you want to keep the 200 tdi. If you go for a V8 a auto might be the way to go.

Don't make it to high. Sometimes you see very much lifted vehicles. I think 2 or 3 inch lift is enough, you drag the axles through the mud anyway. If you need more space for the tyres just change the body to fit. Roel

Now , that was a standard joke at the time,, walk into scrap iron when they were trading, get the cheque book out, and bolt it all on !!!! Rolling with laughter

First job, is find the events you want to do, check their class's etc, and go from there

If it was me,, start standard class, IE only one aid to traction, that being a front winch,, build the car, (cage, tyres, suspension, underside protection etc) and do a few events, to see if you enjoy it ??

You can then move on, and develop the car as you go,, triple winches, overvolting, F & R Lockers, HD shafts and CV's, autobox, under-drive, 36" tyres etc etc

Forget the autobox on a 200 !! need more guts,, TD5, TGV, or a proper engine,, = V8

Their are a few forums, devoted to comp events etc Whistle California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1
