What sort of Haulage do you run up in Stirling ??? Do yo have a low loader and a flat ?? If so do you want to bring the tower crane at Sainsburys back to Birmingham in a couple of weeks, we used Dyce Carriers to get it up there from Manchester, If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The crane folds up and wheels up onto a low loader anything simalar to a King GT44 or Dennison, but the 24t of counterweight and generator go on a flat, we also have another job coming up in Aberdeen wich will need the same going up from Brum.
As for the 0 licence question I have international cpc and have held o licences in the past if that helps If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. A lot of the tilt and slide lorries are 10 tonners downrated to 7.5 tonnes, they have a payload of around 1500kg, 'light sports cars only' .
The 7.5 tonners (non downrated) aren't much better, I would doubt that you could put a 110 on a 7.5 tonner and be legal. Keith |

I was stopped for the second time last month towing my boat down to my dads farm. I was pulled into Beattock weighbridge and Vosa claimed my tow bar was not type approved and as such was illegal on Britain's roads. I informed the joker it was a LR fitted tow bar and was compliant. He informed me that there was no Type Compliance plate fitted and that made it illegal. So after rubbing some WD40 soaked in a cloth over the waxoyld tow bar arm, voila one type approved plate....... .... |

Lorryman, with all these toys you have in your Defender i am surprised the wheel-tappers didn't put you over the weigh bridge? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

RD, apart from the safari snorkel and soft A bar (which the missus bought me and is not coming off ever, as the hassle wouldn't be worth it) my defender looks standard

Interesting, as I have a standard drop plate with an adjustable hitch attached to it...I wonder how that would fare? 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

I also have a Bradley jaw locking Alko hitch fitted and he didn't question this though the plate was visible on it. If it was purchased in the UK then it should be type approved and there should be a sticker on it some place to prove it showing weights etc. Brian. |

But would this be on the adjustable part (sold to me by a trailer centre) or the drop plate, which I think does come with a label on from Landrover. Its a bit dark right now so I can't check. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

Type approval for tow bars EC/94/20 ONLY applies to cars registered after 1st August 1998.
Type approval tow bars are NOT a legal requirement for Non M1 vehicles, light commercial vehicles and private imports from outside the EEC. Therefore if your Land Rover is pre 1st August 1998 OR taxed as a commercial i.e. N1 then you do not need a type approval tow bar. The Southdown detachable tow hitch on our 96 110 is legal despite being non type approved. The 2" receiver with drop plate and tow ball is legal on our 09 110 USW as it is a light commercial N1 despite it being non type approved. Brendan PS Info from NTTA HERE |

Sorry for the delay but had to go outside and take some pics The OEM tow pack which comes fitted by LR has a type approved plate fitted on one of the arms. As you have an adjustable hitch it would be easy to argue that that is part of the hitch assembly. I regularly tow a caravan (caravan club insurance ) or a boat trailer (Towergate Mardon insurance) or a ifor flatbed (Towergate Mardon insurance) and the insurance for each stipulates a type approved tow hitch assembly. Maybe I'm being a bit of a stickler to the rules but feel it may be worth it if I'm involved in an accident. This is the tow ball I have fitted just now which as well as the OEM tow pack is type approved. Click image to enlarge This is the previous Alko towball which I dug out of the caravans front locker which is also type approved. Click image to enlarge HTH Brian. |

The thing is Brendan that my 110 is classed as a PLG as it is a 2009 CSW. Also the numerous insurance companies that I use for various things stipulate in the small print the fitment of a type approved tow system. 22900013A will probably be OK as his defender is N1. Brian. |

PLG is probably M1 so will need type approval tow bars.
USW is commercial so VAT reclaimable, N1 so no need for type approval tow bar. I have been led to believe that it is possible to get single type approval for tow bars. However I have not investigated this one further. Having a quick read of 1071/2009 it would appear that these changes in regulations apply to the road haulage industry rather then to private individuals towing for themselves or for small businesses towing for their own business use rather then getting direct payment for shifting other companies/peoples possessions. This is another area of motoring law which is as clear as mud!!! Brendan |
