Hello,
My local mechanic plugged my car (2011 XS) into his error reading machine and the only fault was Glow Plug Relay so I've got a new one, easy job I thought, just plug in the new one. However, the interwebs says it should be number four in this picture... 
Yet my car seems to be missing number four... Click image to enlarge On the end of the brown wires are a couple of fuses but no relay... Click image to enlarge That black box on the bottom is for the fog light... Click image to enlarge There's nothing at all in the user handbook and the glow plug light on the dash does what you'd expect (light up before starting, goes out after a few second and then car starts). Should I just forget about this? How can I identify any of those relays if they don't follow the plans on the internet? What on earth is going on, is the wiring on a defender a bit random? What relay is missing? Thanks, Andy. |

You are missing relay #1, the pre-2011 ABS relay.
Glow relay is the grey one in position 4 
The prescence of the glow lamp doesn't mean the glow relay is working, the ECU has feedback from the output of the glow relay through Fuse 38 (10A). Check this fuse as well - check it is seated properly if not blown (remove and refit)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but it's the same issue. Back in the summer I replaced the glow plug relay because when plugged in and looking for error codes, the only one listed was glow plug relay (that wasn't the issue I was trying to fix, it turned out to be the fuel pressure thingy).
The question, does the error code need clearing to get the glow plugs/relay to work? Truck is reluctant to start when it's cold, I suspect it's still a glow plug issue as it starts fine when the temperature is over 5°c. |

Don't know the answer for sure but suspect that the fault code does not need to be cleared. If the glow plug light is illuminating on the dash then the ECU is trying to go through the cycle.

Thanks Hank, I've just replace all those fuses as the old ones weren't see-through to see if they're any good. Just need a cold morning to test it. 🤞
