Low price point was certainly the wrong word to use. I agree with your sentiment by the way, having a hardtop on order myself.

Got some bad news yesterday.
Ordered the Defender, a 110 P300 base with some options end of march. I was told with some luck I will get in September. Not so different from other companies ( I looked at a Toyota Prado as well, the lead time was even bigger ) . In June I ask for an update, if JLR has it planned, I was told it is being manufactured as we speak.. a very pleasant surprise. I push my Holiday 2 weeks to mid July. A week ago the dealer tells me that in the system the car shows up as built, but a strange thing - he does not see the VIN number. Another week goes by and he tells me the production stopped due to chip shortage So 0 chance of getting delivery before I leave. Most likely it will be September after all.. What me off is that I had my hopes up... I even ordered a bunch of stuff to be ready to be bolted on for the overland setup considering the short time between delivery and me leaving... I actually got lucky because I was about to dismantle the aux electrical system and other stuff from my Hilux, to be ready to install it on the defender.. . Only the heat wave this week-end stopped me . Defender P300 on order |

What a mess. Sorry to hear that. I suspect I'm in the same boat. Going to badger dealer again soon. My car has obviously been delayed but the fact that the dealer won't admit that is beginning to annoy. Or maybe the comms from factory to dealer is just terrible, since we all seem to be having bad communication issues from different dealer franchises?

To be fair, if delays are down to microchip shortages LR may not actually know when they are getting them.
Whilst they have buying power, the global chip market is shot to bits. Try buying a new graphics card for a computer, nvidia and amd are on their backsides. Its literally a lottery. All the car manufacturers are in the same boat. I went to look at an X7 last week and got told the same thing with December delivery. Yes the comms could be better even if its “sorry no news” but I suspect thats more LR than your dealer. Maybe not. For me personally, if mine gets bumped back i’m not really too fussed, theres nothing I can do about it. Ill just keep using my current car although I do appreciate we all have different needs and circumstances. Keep your fingers crossed folks, they will arrive eventually. |

The shortage of silicon chips is definitely very real. Particularly of the less sophisticated 'embedded controller' type that are used for the control modules in these vehicles. Probably because they are much much lower volume sales than the typical CPU or graphics processors used in full blown computers. (the latter of which are suffering from a double whammy of too many people buying them up to harvest cryptocurrency).
Just last week I was looking through the electronic component catalogues to source an embedded controller chip for a project I have in mind, and was shocked to see the estimated delivery on many of the devices spanning from Spring 2022 through to 2024!. Obviously, for people like me that just want to buy these things in quantities of tens, we are right down at the back of any pecking order. But it shows the problem is industry wide. I was told last week by my JLR dealer that Bosch are supposed to be ramping up production of their modules, with a new production facility, (apparently), and that that should help. We'll see... I suppose the chip orders situation is a bit like the current vaccine situation, with production issues, orders being bumped at the last minute, larger customers demanding their numbers be met, etc. So the delays aren't necessarily JLR's fault, most probably. If they give me a new date, I think it will have to be with a big pinch of salt. As the thing that JLR could be doing better by the sounds of it, is better managing expectations. I'm hoping they use the time wisely to improve quality control and reliability. But who am I kidding! Defender 90 HSE 250D 2022MY - Gave up after two failed orders |

I actually saw some statements from JLR saying that since they make a relatively small number of cars they did not suffer so much from it.
Anyway, I was ready to wait, the false hope thing sucked, Defender P300 on order |

Well I went for a fairly base spec 110 - ordered late March and it has been built and is on its way to the UK for the 9th of July (or so I'm told) - I can't even order what I ordered anymore. If you go for a D250 you can order an S spec, but if you go for a D200 it has to be an SE now as a minimum. Lowest 110 price is now close to £50K rather than £45K. Wonder whether this will change whatever is being produced for everyone. Some people may like being upgraded by surprise, but some pick the lower spec. for the bigger tyres and then upgrade the bits they want upgrading. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Kubrick1978, I was going to ask what your spec was....
I went for an SE but the long wait and option creep led me at add the bigger touchscreen and the clear sight mirror, one of which I suspect is a culprit for delay. Did you option either of those? |

I went for a D200, S with the following: Carpathian Grey, Cross Bars, Side Steps, Classic F&R Mudflaps, Clearsight, Premium LEDs with Signature Design, Black Alloys, Meriden Sound System, 11.4 inch central screen, Privacy Glass, sliding panoramic roof. I think that's about it. I would have opted for a D250 but when I saw the torque on the 6 cylinder was better than the 4 cylinder D240 I made my peace with the lowest spec. diesel.

Nice spec and similar in ethos to mine I think: for me (personally) I'm attracted to the L663 as a comfortable go-anywhere utilitarian vehicle not a luxury or "urban" cruiser.
Look forward to pics. |
