Was standing and staring at the DC last week when I noticed that the bonnet seemed slumped on one side. Thought this looked very odd so chose to inspect the hinge. On doing so I noticed that whilst the bolts were still in place ALL three nuts on the underside had not just loosened but completely come off.
Difficult to see from the outside without looking closely at the hinge/bonnet connection and seeing the gap between the two as the bonnet catch keeps everything down. On opening the bonnet clearly more visible and obviously the bonnet itself ‘wobbled’ on being opened. No idea how this happened, or when, but it’s recent as I was under the hood a month or so ago checking oil and topping up washer fluid. Fortunately no high speed motorway driving in the interim, just daily short trips of 5-10k and 50kmh. Anyway, have taken the opportunity to change to all black bolts with washers and locknuts to keep the lid firmly in place. Most definitely now considering an Optimill (or similar) security hinge upgrade. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Is Defender theft an issue 'over there'? That's disappointing. Not that I'm likely to be anywhere too far afield for the next while, but it would just be disappointing to think that theft and security would still be an issue if I was. Donald

Obviously that did spring to mind, but if it happened at all, it certainly wasn’t outside my house (down a long, private lane), where over the years I’ve left the keys in the Def on a number of occasions, once even in the ignition and with the door open overnight, and where we’ve also left the keys in Mrs Grenadier’s TT on a number of occasions.
Further, being in the middle of a large house/garden project we have materials such as granite steps, RSJs, wooden beams, fencing, bags of cement, compost, breeze blocks and other far more easily stolen and sold items (certainly to any local market, as there’s huge demand for building materials but I’ve never heard of any interest in stolen Def parts), none of which have been touched. And when I’m out and about it’s rarely left for long periods out of sight, and obviously over the last 18mths, never overnight anywhere public because of COVID restrictions. Having said all that, maybe someone ‘had a go’ years ago and I never noticed. But honestly I’m under the bonnet at least once every couple of months, so I’m amazed I never spotted it. Generally very safe here and crime levels are very, very low. But, I’ll keep an eye open on it over the coming weeks. Just to be sure. This happened to mine on the near side only. One bolt was missing and the other two loose. It must have been like that a while as I now have a channel / dent where the bonnet has been rubbing on the wing.
