Not before time. we have one locally that runs fasttrack JCB's with 25t trailers and low-loaders shifting plant and muck all over Central Scotland and the drivers have no LGV or training... the quicker VOSA shuts him down the better. He bought an artic tipper and got shot of it in a couple of months as it was under VOSA legislation and Derv eligible... Goods vehicles for carrying goods i say!! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I agree there are plenty of cowboys out there, I have to compete with them myself. This law will get rid of the cowboys (we hope) but also some of the smaller decent oeprators like myself who simply cannot afford to comply. I have two choices, either work illegally and hope I don't get caught, or find a new job. In a recession. Bloody marvellous. 2011 110 USW

Or comply.... you have had bad info regarding a standard national O licence and to be honest you will probably be 3/4 way there already with maintainence records and roadworthiness standards. You will need to get the wife to sit a CPC exam to be your nominated TM and have around £1,500 in the bank for each vehicle you require a disc for and that can be a Credit card or in savings... Simples? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Having the money to apply for the OL, and the CPC exam (I think I can actually do this myself) and for the vehicles (I presume 1500 each for Landrover and trailer, although my understanding was £8500) is the problem. Right now every penny I earn is going back into the business, leaving us with very little off the top, we can't save anything and I can't see my bank manager lending us another load of cash, as that would put my repayments up, which when you struggle to get a full weeks work anyway I just can't afford. Customers want it all for free and getting them to pay a decent price is hard work, most would rather just not bother. 2011 110 USW

I have just spoke to VOSA and it all changed in 2009 when you used to pay per vehicle.
It is now as follows..
To apply- £250
Issuing the licence- £391
Fund per vehicle- First vehicle £8,100 and every other £4,500
CPC can be around £600
Advertising in local paper can vary but figure around £100
A bit stiff for a blue disc????

Just get a farmers son to do it and swipe 50% off the top? Welcome to sub-contracting. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

if its that sort of money then I'd dump the landy and trailer and get one of those trucks with a movable loadbed that you winch the car onto like the AA use. they cant be over 7.5ton so can drive on a car licence.

Just forget trailers!

You need an O licence for anything over 3.5 tonnes now.

I do actually have HGV2 but I needed that to drive anything over 3500KG GVW due to when I passed my test.

Those transit/sprinter beavertails with 3500Kg GVW you see about can only carry about 1500KG, nowhere near enough for the kind of cars I move. 2011 110 USW

I have a few Standard National O licences spare and if you lived up here you could borrow one until things picked up... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I can put MY "O" licence on any vehicle i wish to and i then become responsible for all aspects of law and road worthiness. They are not transferable between vehicles. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

No, you only have to prove you can access the required funds if need be. A credit card or loan from a friend or an overdraft facility will keep them happy... assets don't count. VOSA just need to know you have the means to repair and run the vehicle correctly. The day after you have proven you are financially enabled you can empty your account and rip your cards up. I did. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

True, but I still would have to set up the availability...
As you will understand I don't want to go too far into the intricate details of setting up my business, but lets just say there is not much left I can get from my bank. My set up load was less than what I need to have set aside for the Landrover. I would also assume the trailer counts as a second vehicle and so needs £4500, which is crazy as it didn't even cost me that to buy.

All sounds like too many hoops to jump through to me. 2011 110 USW
