Interior bulkhead - what are these fixings for?
Good afternoon,

Wondering if anyone knows what the fittings on the bulkhead behind the front seats of my defender are for?

Also why are there two riveted panels in the bulkhead, can't see what purpose they serve?

Was told when I went on a factory training course in the 90s that the panels were there to stop panel flex/resonance. But they disappeared on the later bodies?

^^ A myth, I suspect. If that was the case they would simply have pressed ribs into the panel, and I think that they were still present to run-out models.

Interesting though that the factory didn't know what they were for either!

I think I read somewhere that the panels were there for removal when wading to allow water to distribute over the full vehicle, but if that was the case I would have thought that they would be screwed rather than riveted?

OK, the rubber ring holds the base plate of the jack presumably then. I tried it there and it didn't seem very secure, though maybe I wasn't doing it right.

I'd wondered if the panels were there to give access during the building of the car but it doesn't seem likely. I also wondered if taking one out would make it easier to transport anything, but it would foul on the cubby box / seats.
