South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
Puma: sticky 2nd gear
Hi gents,

Recently I've started noticing that the 2nd gear in my Puma is very sticky, only really happens in the morning.

But now it's getting so bad that when I tried to go out this morning (at around 10 am), I almost had to park the car down the street as I couldn't get into 2nd.

The mech says a few Puma owners have also reported the same.

They reckon putting 500-750ml of ATF in the gearbox solves this - what do you guys reckon?

Thanks --

How many miles has it done? If the 2nd gear synchro is worn and it needs replacing, you may well get a few more thousand miles out of the box by reducing the viscosity of the oil, but at the cost of the whole of the rest of the box.

Not a synchro then... Well shouldn't be. It's too young.

Could be one of the detents?

ATF fluid was spec’d for the lt77. Not very good for lubrication, but apparently helps shifting.
MT82 is very different, and I would be hesitant to add ATF. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks.

Mech reckons we do a complete fluid change with something full synth, like Motul or Redline. --

I'm going with Redline MTL MTL® 75W80 GL-4 Gear Oil: http://chemsailoils.co.za/product/mtl-75w80-gl-4-gear-oil/

Not cheap, but will see what it does and report back. --

Ok, Redline's been in for about a week now.

Gearshifts are definitely smoother, but there's still a bit of 'sticky' in that 2nd gear - whether it's 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd/vice versa. --
