The apparent (southern) Irish registration is curious, I cannot find any other registration of a similar format. I wonder if perhaps was used for film work in Police guise on Irish plates.

They’d probably already had a bunch of off-side rear panels pre-drilled and needed to fill the holes!

I needed to replace the mirrors, and couldn’t decide which style was correct. I’ve decided to go with defender style, as they were already on the car and are more practical, but couldn’t find any definitive evidence if these would have been on it from new. Some websites suggest the changeover was August ‘82, but you can find ‘83 and ‘84 cars with the older mirrors on, but perhaps they were sitting around for a while before being registered.

Re door mirrors.

From what I have seen, the late 88" SIII's that continued to be built alongside the new One Ten (for over a year until the introduction of the Ninety) shared a number of similar components, such as rear name badges and door mirrors.

The SIII's had plastic grommets in their front wings, where the the mirrors were formerly mounted.
(There may be the odd exception to this because, as LRA has pointed out, Land Rover were not overly scrupulous in their changeover and cut-off dates).

The door mirrors are commonly referred to as Defender mirrors, even though they were introduced when SIII's were still being built, and had been fitted to One Tens for seven years before Defender was introduced.

It was the military style door mirrors, rather than the wing mirrors that I was thinking of. Mine has the grommets in the wings but they look original.

These seem to show up on non-military Series 3 from about 1980, so it was a question of whether my police spec late model should have these or the 90/110 ones.

Your SIII is an A plate.

One Tens began being built on Y plates, so by the time your SIII was built, both would have been being built side by side in the factory for a while, and would be using some common parts. They wouldn't bother with the expense of having two different types of door mirror - which is why SIII's from '83 on usually have the One Ten type.

I cannot see a reason why a Police-spec vehicle would revert to the earlier mirror, so I suggest the the One Ten door mirror on yours would be correct.

However, if there is any hard evidence to the contrary, then I am quite open to being re-educated.

They finished prep on the body today and got it back in the spray booth for primer. The bulkhead only needed one small plate behind the windscreen frame. I've not asked them to make it perfect and remove every dent, but it's looking pretty straight!

Interestingly of my 2 s3 1985 lightweights, 1 has the old style and 1 has the defender mirrors fitted.

The thing is and we see this with S2s all the time and it's that anyone could have changed anything at anytime. Unless it's been owned since new it's nigh on impossible to know why something is different and the biggest thing is it's only the likes of us that care. When these vehicles were in actual use their owners of the time usually didn't care and parts would often be swapped for whatever was at hand.

They are masked off so assume staying as is otherwise I am also guessing they'd have come off before painting.

I know the paintwork will be shiny, but I didn’t want the whole car to be too shiny! All the galv is pretty good, so the cappings have stayed on the tub, but the corners were removed before painting, and the capping on the doors has also been removed.
The crossmember and front bumper mounts will be painted black, but I’ll leave the rest of the chassis. ‘68 V8 hybrid
