I’ve had this for ten years. Seven years ago it needed a chassis. After four years I gave up on the first mechanic and towed it about 30% complete to a garage I know well, who got it complete back on the road last month. Now it’s finally time for paint.

It was part of a large order of Range Rovers for the Manchester met in 1983, and this was registered to the chief constable.
The colour is arctic white, to match the Range Rovers. They had sequential number plates and I’ve found a couple of images of the Range Rovers, but not this. It’s late production, with the 99/110 rear light positions and plastic riveted rear badge. It has the optional larger brakes with servo also.

There was a factory fitted split charge system with twin 50a ammeters in the dash, holes in the roof for lights, and the safari roof still has the dayglow police paint underneath.

It appears to be a genuine 40,000 miles. All I’ve added is high back front seats, tubeless disco wheels and refreshed the engine with an ACR performance camshaft, electronic ignition, 2.5 90/110 manifold and a brand new twin choke Weber.

There are two items that I’m trying to find out more about.
1. Under the rear number plate there’s evidence of old markings - 83 C 1?04. Any ideas?
2. Has anyone seen the rubber bump stop on the rear right before? It appears to be original, but I can’t decide whether to keep it or not?

A couple of shots from before, plus three of the Range Rovers - I had a photo of them lined up on the motorway but can’t find it at the moment.

Very nice. The rubber bump stop is original and was fitted to later vehicles to protect the fog light from the spare wheel on the rear door. The problem went away on the 90/110 as the wheel carrier is higher on the door. Darren

I guess that explains why I don't recall seeing one -
It must have only been fitted on the last full production year on hardtops with rear mounted spares.
Any idea of a part number or where I might find one in better condition? It's not in the parts pdf list that I have.

This doesn't appear to have ever had a rear mounted spare, but something had been mounted to the back, I guess police specific.

The bodyshop found an unused derringer style bullet in the dashboard!

I should have done the chassis swap myself - it would have been quicker, but I've had two kids while this was off the road so free time has been precious. Having said that I did manage to refurb and sell a 1972 SIII during that time...

Nice series. The markings behind the rear number plate looks like an Irish number plate was fitted. Did it spend time in Ireland or was the rear tub replaced at some point? 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

I’m pretty sure it hasn’t - I have the DVLA history somewhere and the first owner was the Chief Constable at a police residence, then I think it stayed continuously in the Manchester area until two owners before me.

The number plate that came with the car was old, but unlikely to be original, and the tub has white paint inside and out matching the Arctic white paint under the bonnet.

Maybe is not but seems to match the format, size, font etc of an Irish number plate suggesting the vehicle was imported to Ireland post 1987.

I tired 83C1404 into a reg check site and no vehicle found. Changing the 4 to a different digit gets results back for all but 7.

Could the owner have moved to Ireland for a bit? So never sold it but registered it in Ireland while he was there?

I could be putting 2 and 2 together to get 5 though. Someone more experienced will probably know the answer. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

I’ll have to dig out the dvla history. I think the next owner after the police was 1989, so it’s not impossible that it was sent over to Ireland for a stint before being de-fleeted.
Perhaps the unused hand gun bullet found in the dash is more likely to have come from there!

Looking at the holes on the front bumper looks like it would have been fitted with rubber blocks for pushing broken down cars on the motorways.

Unlikely before being de-fleeted as that is a southern reg. Would have thought it would have stayed on UK plates if it was in Northern Ireland. Unless it was going under cover Laughing 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

Ah Mr Anorak, I have to tell you that the rear rubber door stop was also fitted to early One Tens. (Not to Ninetys which came later).

You can see the holes for it in this picture.

That bump stop is remarkably difficult to find.

Through contacts, I managed to source two of them for my One Tens that always had them fitted. I was hoping the pic would show the part number, but no matter because inputting the part number will bring up absolutely nothing.

Thanks for that. I've asked the bodyshop to check for a part number (I'm 120 miles away), but I'm not hopeful.

I managed to track down a new old-stock rear badge for less than half the £125+delvery that the dealers are selling reproductions for.

That's very true but only because LR are numpties and it takes them a while to realise when parts are obsolete Laughing Darren
