1999 defender 90 TD5 Sump plug botch

Hi all, first post here and looking for help please - I recently bought the above and the previous owner said something like "All the early TD5's had an issue with the sump plug so I took the precaution of redrilling the plug with a smaller bolt"
Took the truck to a LR indie and he wrote this: "Found sump drain plug damaged, drilled through and smaller bolt fitted through drain plug, found this to be leaking oil. Requires new sump and renew engine oil. estimated costs to renew £939.76 inc VAT.
It's worth saying the leak is minor.
On various Fb groups I had a number of varying comments mainly around buying a new plug. It seems a new sump pan and gasket is about £500. On ebay there is a chap selling a used TD5 sump pan from a discovery 2 for 50 quid. A local mechanic could fit it for a 100 quid. I believe you need a gasket and sealant and to generally know what you're doing.
Questions:
any thoughts on a second hand pan? does the pan for a discovery TD5 fit a Defender TD5 - are the engines identical? can I get the gasket? Or am I just kidding myself and I should get it done properly by the indie for ~ £1000?

Discovery and and defender sumps are the same, just need gasket for sump to block and gasket for turbo drain. Its a messy but ok job. Jack up front of car to let axle drop and give you more clearance to work.

All Td5 sumps are the same.

As to availability of gaskets, a quick Google search will show that they are readily available from a multitude of sources.

Are you sure you need a new sump, rather than just a new sump plug?

Or tap out to next sump plug size up if there is enough room. Re tapping kits available on ebay and other outlets. Done this a couple of times with a range of cars.

I would try to drill and rethread and then fit a Femco drain plug, so you don’t keep working the thread.
