I had exactly the same issues, I fitted a Britpart one (I'm not generally a fan of Britpart). I guess its been on 6 months now and so far no issue. I've done a lot of off-road snow driving and some long motorway drives with it.

Thank you Kevlar. I would not be surprised if Britpart sources the header tank from OEM.
Good to hear that yours is good. I might have to go down that route. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

If you want to push the boat out and spend a fair bit of cash https://www.optimill-uk.com/defender-tdci-header-tank.html then optimill do an aluminium one. But it does come in at £270 !!!!! Compared to circa £30 for a Britpart one , £44 for a bearmach one or £70 from landrover. I’m sure I’ve seen some forum posts on it.

£270 I am sure that I do not want to pay that money, plus want to keep it stock.
It it was not for the stock look that I want, there are a lot of options, aluminium or plastic, although I do not know what is the effect of introducing another metal in the cooling circuit. I guess it will not be exact alloy as the head! Since the genuine one failed at about 8 years, I think I will not go that wrong with a britpart or bearmach one. Would be nice to have a level sensor for worse case.. probably a capacitive sensor and an alarm, stand alone would work. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

To be honest I would seriously struggle to justify £270. One additional cost I would think about is adding the
IVECO 99489567 Cap mod. See https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic44373...oolant+cap |

The allisport one seems to have a couple of options, like sight glass and float level switch. But theses are expensive items that may justify themselves if you need absolute reliability in extreme conditions but beyond that the standard LR one seems to perform ok and you can get 3 or four of them for the price of the aluminium ones. As for checking fluid level I do when cold by dipping my index finger in, which seems to be the perfect length. |

I put a flash light against the tank (bottom side) and it shows the level quite clearly. Every phone has a flashlight nowadays. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
