2.4 white smoke on start up
My 2009 2.4 has had quite a lot of white smoke on startup, but as soon as you set off it disappears and there is no smoke once the engine is warmed up. The engine never runs hot, and the coolant levels are all correct. I was wondering if anyone knows the reason for the smoke on startup. Thanks

Is the idle stable when cold?

No, it’s not great but as soon as you increase the revs then let it idle again it’s fine.

Okay, do you find she pulls strongly in 6th or feels sluggish?

Also does the idle run smooth once up to temp after a run?

If it does, the it might be a good idea to change the VCV.

Also you may wish to run Millers Diesel additive too, I run this constantly and will help keep injectors cleaner and various other items.
Also having the MAF and MAP sensors with a proper spray cleaner may help too.

Issues when cold on first start are commonly akin to VCV issues, I recently changed mine and was well worth doing.
PFJones supply these.
You need no special tools and doesn’t need programming in either.

If yours is original as was mine, then it probably is due for a change.

This is a suggestion, and not guaranteed to be the culprit but may well solve the issue without spending too much money.

I would definitely recommend the additive first as this will give everything a clean through anyway including the VCV.
And is safe to use permanently and will run smoother, with a little more MPG and power.

Thumbs Up

Yes, it pulls really well in all gears, and yes once upto temperature the idle is smooth. I’ll get some millers additive and try that and look into changing the vcv. Thanks for your help.

I’d suggest one or more leaky injectors. Leak a little once engine not running as the fuel rail stays partly pressurised. When you start the engine it burns off the wet diesel in the cylinder. Often will feel like it’s misfiring just until the fuel is burnt off. 2011 130 Utility Body

I’ve been looking at several vcm’s, and it says a pump learn procedure needs to be carried out with a diagnostics tool?

Youll probably find it’s worse on very cold days, but before you go spending lots of money try a diesel system additive.

Make sure you have no more than a quarter tank when you add it and get the engine nice and hot with a good half hour drive to flush things through.

This is also a good thing to do before taking your vehicle for MOT every year, a bit of a flush out may help on emissions testing. Ride like you stole it!!

officially you need to do a learn after fitting a vcv, its better if you do do the learn but it will work fine without and sort itself out. Cheers

If you haven't already done so, you might want to take a look at this thread:

Thanks I’ll have a look.

I’ve ordered a vcv valve and some millers diesel additive so I’ll let you know if there’s any improvement.
