Terrain Response 2 - worth the cash?
Hello gents. I'm considering putting an order in for a new Defender. It will get used off road (greenlaning/touring mostly).

What's the consensus with TR2? Is it worth adding the Advanced Offroad Capability Pack at just over £1k? I'd definitely be getting the air susp and rear diff auto locker but I'm just not convinced that the "old" TR is not fit for purpose?

Thoughts from those that have used it on the new Defender?

I think now you can add the ATPC on its own or in the TR2 pack

When I bought mine it was for the ATPC.

I have not used any of it yet... but the only benefit beside the ATPC is the Auto function - but if you are familiar with the LR TR modes - not sure it is worthwhile. - I guess you can manually lock the Diffs if you want too.

Better spend the same money on the E Diff.. ?

I have none, only the standard TR, no air suspension either.

It’s the most capable off road vehicle they’ve built, only if you spend thousands on off road packs Rolling Eyes my Discos done well without it. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

It is possible, Configurable Terrain Response can control the diffs.

Do you mean this:

What does "slip limited" mean? If it means 100% locked, wouldn't it say that?

What makes you think 100% locked is what’s always best?

There are three diff modes on TR2 for vehicles with the locking rear diff fitted:

Forgot to say yes it probably is worth it purely for the ability to manually lock the diffs, but if you’re not too concerned about warranty you can buy it from a company that will enable it in the cars settings for a few hundred quid rather than pay LR a grand for it.

So you manually "lock" the diff but the iGuide states "a status bar around the icon indicates the amount of lock being applied":

Which seems to confirm that they do not operate in an on/off fashion but rather in an almost infinitely variable fashion or at least 3 phased steps ~ just what controls the level of wheelspin is the question?

Wheel speeds, essentially (although as I understand it, the e-diff has some continual degree of lock in off-road modes, whatever the display graphic is doing)

It's this language, from JLR, I find frustrating. I can't be the only person to think locked/unlocked are binary terms rather than "degrees of lock" through the e diff clutch pack.

I'm also wondering what benefit the e diff is in creating resistance through the clutch pack when at the other end of the driveshaft the brake caliper can do exactly the same task?

I think that applies to vehicles such as mine where I can’t manually lock the diff? Or set to auto for those with configurable TR? 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

So it would need someone with an e diff to "lock" it:

And either jack the back end up to demonstrate or drive it in a straight line in a car park and film the diff lock screen to see what it did?

Shame Powerful UK has got it ~ can't see anyone else going to the effort?

Really not clear what the issue is here, there are all sorts of systems which don’t need to bother an operator with the most precise minutiae of their operation. Presumably you’ve got rid of the damped coolant temperature gauge in all your cars? Fitted a live wheel speed vs ignition timing vs brake pressure gauge to watch the traction and stability controls work?
