3.9 V8 into 2002 td5?
Is this possible?
If anyone has done anything like this I would like to know what goes into it..what conversion plates or parts are needed for the gearbox and any other things that i will need to consider...
i just want an offroader defender for fun but the td5 does not run
a v8 will no doubt be more fun...and probably less efficient Very Happy Very Happy

Yes will fit.
Easiest way is Discovery engine and gearbox, ashcroft conversion for gear selectors to fit defender ones on.
Cut off TD5 engine mounts, weld on V8 ones.
Change throttle pedal to cable type.

That's the one, saves splitting the box to put defender sticks on.

Martin on here would be the one to speak to regarding the electrics side re the TD5 dash. Mine were relatively easy as for a Tdi I only needed a keyed live for stop solenoid and one for starter.
Whats up with the TD5 you have, not be better spending the money on it as diesels better waterproofed for off road etc

its a fine engine i reckon....just somethings not right with it....cranks healthily
has plenty of compression
changed cps, fuel pump, fuel pump is putting out enough pressure and still nothing doing...
healthy engine plenty compression just no fuel getting there
it was on a site for years a trashed by kids who cut some wiring in the doors etc

now considering putting an m57 bmw in...lots of people have done them and it looks relatively straightforward....the only annoying thing seems to be how hard it is to find a six speed manual bmw gearbox....not sure an r380 would cope very well

Have you spoken with Ashcroft Transmissions as they do kits for auto boxes on M57 and rebuild R380 boxes for both P38 and Defender?

I did check that out but i want to keep it manual if possible and stay with the r380.
think the m57 will bolt straight onto the p38 bell housing which goes onto the r380? not sure if thats right....but the m57 is looking the way to go...so many engines available...

Hi, I just saw your post. So? Has your project been successful? I did exactly the same.
