Tow bar electrics
Looking for some advice please I’ve got a 7 pin electrics on the defender and my trailer is 13 pin

What would be best twin plugs with the adapter or just putting the single plug are they just a straight swap TIA

You’ll need something like this...

Or this

They do reverse ones also depending on your set up Ride like you stole it!!

That top adaptor is the wrong way around (for 13pin vehicle to 7pin trailer).

Do you have both 12N & 12S (black and grey 7pin) sockets on the defender currently?

If you only have the black 12N one then I would just straight swap it for a 13pin socket. The 13 pin system is so much better than the old 7pin ones.

If you have both sockets on the defender it can be slightly more messy to wire both cables into a 13pin socket - still better in my opinion though.

It shouldn't have a bearing on your solution, but you might want to bear in mind that if you replace the 7-pin socket currently on your Defender with a 13-pin socket, the new socket will be tested as part of the MoT test. Quite wjhat aspects of it are tested, I don't know, but 13-pin sockets are in-scope, 7-pin sockets are not.

Good point Blackwolf, MOT test should only cover:

Quote:
On vehicles fitted with a trailer 13 pin Euro-socket, use an approved device to check that the socket is wired to correctly operate the trailer:

position lamps
stop lamps
direction indicators
rear fog lamp

So only the functions of the standard 7pin 12N socket.

If you've only got a single black seven pin 12N socket then no, as the live for that function comes from the grey 12S socket.

If you've got two seven pin sockets and an adapter to convert to 13 pin then yes it will. Darren

The 13 pin electrics on my 90 have never been tested (I always watch the MOT because I'm sad like that Laughing)

13 pin in my opinion is a far, far superior connector than the 7 N+S setup in every way - more reliable too Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Where’s the best place to get the 13 pin?
Is it a straight swap on the defender

Brought mine from paddock spares and technically plugged it myself Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Think it only became part of the MOT inspection from February 2021. Richard

Mine was MOTd in March so should have been tested. Would have passed anyway as it all works as it should Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
