If you are on about the shields then I would just remove them, they always get debris stuck between them and the disks.
As for replacement, I think they can be removed in situ so no need to strip it all down and is only 3 bolts holding them in - maybe wrong though as it’s been a few years since I removed mine |

Yes sorry, I do mean the shields - not keen on stripping the brake disc / hub etc. so if they can be simply removed by just undoing the mounting bolts that would be ideal - I will probably replace rather then leave off though.

Yes, they should just unbolt as far as I recall.

Ah, thanks blackwolf, a bit more involved then, I’ll factor that in to whether I bother

Sorry, my earlier post was wrong, hence my edit, but it wasn't quick enough to stop you reading it! Sorry.

Ok, understood, so just the three mounting bolts to remove then - in which case I’ll give it a go and replace with new shields

Yes, 3 M6 bolts.
One of them has the nut welded to the shield. The other 2 you need 2 spanners, or a ratchet and spanner or grinder or a plasma cutter. Joking, M6 will shear easily if they are rusted. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Don’t remove them unless you do a lot of off roading in very heavy mud. In those conditions they can cause bother by trapping mud/stones as above, but in all other conditions they serve a much more important function of significantly extending brake pad life.
I was going through a set of pads in a month on mine before I put the guards back on. |

I took mine of and removed the loose rust, a coat of jenolite and them hammertoe and they are good as new. That was about a year ago and they still look good. It’s a 5 minute job to get them off.

Cant see why no backplates would make any difference. I removed mine on a TD5 2 years ago and no difference |

Because the discs are more exposed to the spray from the front wheels which is laden with grit - particularly if used on unsealed surfaces. If you rarely go off tarmac it won’t make as much difference to pad life.
