Sump removal
Hi sll,
It appears I've got a few leaks round the sump of my 1999 TD5.Thought I'd treat her to a new sump gasket.

How difficult a job is it?

Is there enough room to get the sump out without removing crossmember or jaclking engine up ?

Any Gotchas ?

TIA

Not a bad job to do, can be done in situ

I did mine a few years ago in situ. You will have to jack the front up about 8" to get enough clearance between the front axle and sump or it won't be able to clear the pickup pipe. The rear of the gasket is a swine to get the little pips on the gasket seated in the sump and rear of the engine.

Worth checking your oil pump bolt whilst there.

Mine ended up leaking just as bad as before i changed it, just in a different place! Rolling with laughter

I absolutely hated doing mine. Was really awkward trying not to get drips of oil in your eyes and down your arms. And awkward to get it over the diff. Really messy job I wouldn't want to do again in a hurry. I think I'd probably get a specialist to do that particular job. As the poster above says, lining the gasket up correctly is a nightmare.

gasket is the issue
Agree with the rest not hard job but messy, off is easy. The issue is the gasket, read that you could use plastic strips through the holes to get it aligned.....ended up clueing the gasket to the sump. If I recall it correctly you also needed to add sealant to a number of points as well (but I might be wrong on this). Not seen any Youtube clip on this maybe someone is ready for that?

There is a decent write up here - http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Oil_pump_bolt.html

The job is not difficult, have done it two or three times now. It can be done with the wheels on the ground but is easier jacked up on axle stands.

When you buy the sump gasket don't forget the oil drain pipe has a metal gasket as well.

The key things are to keep everything clean and use a torque wrench. It is easy to create leaks by over tightening the bolts on these gaskets...
