Having done this myself last week, here is a partial answer.
Remove the plastic retainer that runs up the door pillar. Then roll the bottom corner of the mat towards the gearbox tunnel. Take the screw out of the plunger switch for the door / light / alarm (I cut through the mat to allow it to pass over the wire in case I lost it in the pillar). This enables you to fold more of the mat up to get behind it. I'm part way through sound/proofing carpeting and I did all this so I could apply sticky pads to the bulkhead. I'm interested hear how the whole bulkhead mat comes out (other than bu cutting it) but I will be retaining it under the carpet- it is mass- loaded vinyl so it should be making a difference. The Exmoor Trim instructions say to keep this "footwell" section but chuck the seat-box and tunnel sections- I'm wary of doing this and will be investigating if the carpet will fit over the top. If not then I’ll be applying deadening mat and closed cell foam liberally to seat box, gear tunnel and as much of the bulkhead as I can get to. Cheers, Guy. |

Just done it myself as well on an 09 Defender with AC installed. I could not find a way how to remove the bulkhead trim without:
a. Removing all the AC components (I had already removed the dash) b. Cutting the trim in hals and slide it from behind the AC unit. I chose option b, and it still gave a fight before coming out. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

So I wasn’t imagining how tricky this was proving, it really is a PiTA by the sounds of things. Was concermed about that door switch disappearing into the pillar when I had quick peek the other day...Thanks guys I think partially getting it out should be enough for what I want to do, I’ll have another more committed go tonight!

Also behind the dash, there are plates (which are unpainted, and probably have a brownish colour), one either side, just above the footwell to hold the trim up. I think it is not possible to remove these brackets taking the dash out. But maybe you can manage to slide the matting.
The door switch will not fall in the pillar. I was working on a basic model, and there seemed to be also the harness for the electric windows/central lock. Since there was some welding needed, I pulled them out into the engine bay, but not before I wrapped a piece of wire so can pull them back again. In case wire springs into the pillar, it is not too difficult to fsh it out again as there is a larger access hole where the cable to the central lock/ electric windows.. thoughI do not know what spec you have. On the driver side, the matting has an aperture for the gas pedal. But the opening seems to be just enough, so I had to remove the gas pedal. Bit awkward to hold the nuts on the other side of the bulkhead. The clutch and brake pedals are still in the way, but managed to get it out in the end. PS.. I have not yet tried to install everything back yet, as the Defender just returned from the body shop, and I am kind of tied with other work. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

This is the link to the Exmoor Trim video that I found quite helpful
Why do you want to take the bulkhead mat off? As I said earlier, wherever I have to remove sound insulation I envisage replacing it before carpet goes in. (The Exmoor deluxe carpet has a 5mm ish ‘felt’ backing which I think will need help in the front if it is to contribute to making things quieter.) By contrast the rear had nothing so my newly installed combination of butyl backed mat, closed-cell foam and mass-loaded vinyl (generally two of these) with carpet as the final layer has made a significant improvement. But now it is so much better in the back any deterioration in the front will be immediately noticeable. Cheers, Guy. |
