The only thing I can recommend you is yes, find another garage.
If you want to check for heavy berating, it is quite simple to do, just remove the oil filler cap when engine is running and is at temperature. You might get some vapour of oil, small amount is normal. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Where did you take your defender for this opinion?

have used them before on a previous vehicle so thought they would be good - they just won't do any engine work sadly so need to find a suitable chap that knows his way around the 2.2 transit engine!

Looks like a decent garage.
What’s the full story/history of the Defender. Is it mega mileage? Why did you take it to them? I’m surprised they are only offering a full engine option and no others For complete engines Turners have a very good reputation in Defender circles. https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/lr0553...2x23282392 |

Only had it for 5 months, previous owners were Land Rover Ripon in Yorkshire and have their internal invoices as proof it was serviced regularly.
130k miles, so not nothing, but a lot considering the age. Took it in for the oil leak |

At 5 months ownership what is your warranty situation?
It all sounds very dubious to me. Definitely need some more opinions on it. Especially if it actually drives ok. |

Sounds like a piston ring issue, probably get away with a good engine rebuild
Try changing the crank case breathers first Ride like you stole it!! If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

"Breathing heavy... New engine" Wow. Glad you're looking to take it elsewhere.
Do you have any photos of where the oil leak is coming from? We may be able to offer some advice > 110 XS Double Cab |
